Green caps
    #3094794 - 09/05/04 11:37 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hi guys, a friend of someone I used to know just made his first 50/50 casing, got a great first flush, and has a decent looking second flush growing.  Today, after taking a close look at the casing, he noticed a couple of the smaller mushrooms (which are still growing) have greenish tint on the caps.  Only a portion of the smaller mushrooms have this, and none of the green extends below the cap.  This friend might be wondering if this is due to the mushrooms starting below the surface and just be light bruising.  This is the first time he noticed it and there is no traces of color on the casing layer.  Any clues as to what this might be?  Thanks :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

I guess I am really looking for some feedback indicating that this is not green mold or some deadly bacteria or virus

Aborts are just mushrooms that don't fully grow. You have to pay attention to when it happens and harvest them so they don't rot.
It looks like what you're seeing are aborts that were kept in the cake. Your description might indicate they are beginning to rot, so take them out very carefully and toss them. Additionally, you might spray the cake with some h2o2:h20 solution to "clean" it a little bit.
Try reading the faqs about "aborts".
