Look like Maitake to me :smile:

what a find. Id be back there to get that truckload - picking only the tender yunguns' , leave the old ones for the squirrels.
dry them for later,  good for your immunity

yeah, i'm gonna hazard grifola frondosa. check a field guide and/or try the hunting forum. maitake should occur at the base of trees (predominantly oak). keep an eye out and your mouth shut and you should have plenty of eating for years to come.

also found at the base of a large oak tree.

field guides are wonderful tools. so is the hunting forum.

a better question, imo, might be: are there any nasty-type fungi that might be easily mistaken for maitake? i certainly don't know of any.

btw, maitake are scrumptious and those look like maitake. /drool

I found what must have been a 10 pound specimen yesterday. A truck load though. thats crazy!
