heh, MJ lived in sydney forkes in cape breton.
anyway. cape breton is very different than the rest of NS its all mountains and quite cold in contrast to the rest of NS. due to these climactic variables, many species that inhabit the mainland cannot be found on CB island. CB doesnt have any unique species im aware of. but ill just bet that with all the trees, logging, and cooler weather you will find alot of Gymnopilus spectibilus.
nova scotia however is good for mushrooms. i missed last spring locally as i was off in vancouver doing my thing there.
the magic mushrooms i have found locally are
amanita muscaria
paneolus subbaltaetus
paneolus castenifolies
paneolus oliviaceus
hygrocybe conica
psilocybe semilanceata
psilocybe pelliculosa
psilocybe strictipes
gymnopilus prupurtaris (i never spell it right)
im not a great follower of mushroom literature, but i do read alot of posts. :) and i know that MJ has said several times that paneolus subbaltaetus is a spring mushroom found after the spring rains. we have had a few rains and warm weather so it shold be soon. last year was the wettest summer in 50 years and consequently i picked many MANY mushrooms. no word yet on if this will be a dry or wet year.
ive only ever gone to cape breton once when i was about 12.
some guys tore open our tent and stole my parents beer and rum while we were gone swimming. when we got back i went for a jog in the woods and i spotted some teenagers with my parents beer, i kept them talking for a while then continued on my run, doubled back and got my mother. she came, she was all doubting me and stuff, when we got there the kids and the booze were gone. later we found them but they were without the ill-gotten gains.
they denied it of course. so we went back into the woods and looked around. mom was frustraited then i found a broken fern. i said "this way" she laughted and told me not to be such a fool.
next thing she heard from me was "FOUND IT!"
it was all their lying out in the tall grass. like they wanted to have a good look at their stash.
we got them back, contacted the park ranger, my mother confronted the kids mother who was a completely useless woman. "my kids are good, maybe youre kids lying, maybe he took it" bullshit. i got a letter from the RCMP thanking me for all my tracking skills :) heh heh
i wouldnt narc out anybody, but theft is a different story.
