Large grain and yield?
    #3098936 - 09/06/04 02:18 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I started my first strain with mazapatec spores in an agar. when the mycelium was large enough I went to rye grain and distilled water staralized in a pressure cooker. I had no contaminates visable but after 2 weeks in the jars I could only see the large clumps that started from the agar. I had been shaking the jars every couple of days to try to seperate the clumps but they wouldn't break up. Then just to see if they needed oxygen I pored 1 jar into a little dish and capped it with a vermiculite/water mixture. After 3 days I could see through the sides large amounts of mycelium forming and after 5 days poking out through the vermiculite. My questions are: Why wasn't I able to see the mycelium before? and how much dry mushrooms should I expect from a fishbox sized container(about10" x 16") Thanks

Did you soak the grain for 24 hours? Did you drain well? Was there water at the bottom?

You don't have to simmer grains. It seems to work well for a lot of people, but soaking 24 hours is more reliable and harder to mess up IMHO.

Soaking does not add water content. It's purpose is to germinate the endospores that survive normal PC tempatures.

Simmering expands the grain and adds water content.

Soaking adds water content. Just not as fast as simmering.

Nor as much. After soaking for 24 hours you still can add more water still to them as they puff up about twice the size from after the soak. If you soaked it long enough to absorb the water you get in a simmer you'd have a chance of germinating grains. I know I would (happened), damned 50 bag of almost green rye.
