What's happening to my weird plant?
    #3097999 - 09/06/04 06:35 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I bought this weird cactus/succulent/whatever it is a few weeks ago.
It had a small mushroom pin growing from the pot, but it never grew further.

Last week i noticed the plant was soft and mushy. I thought it was like my Pedro whom when is soft wants water, so i watered it.

Today i went to check it, the lower 'leaves' have totally wilted, and the top part was loose from them, as you can see in the pic. All the plant smells like fungus/mushrooms.
And the soil has lots of algae and mycelia.

Can i still save it?
Maybe let the top part dry or calous and try to re-root it?

BTW, anyone know what plant is that?

Ummm..when my cactus have been normal, and the next thing I notice is they are soft, I wouldn't consider watering them. Isn't that a sign of too much moisture??? This is what i've followed with all the cactus i've owned...with near perfect success.

Souds like it might have root rot or something. If I was you I'd carefully remove that top part which looks healthy, get some well drained soil (you can usually buy 'cactus and succulent mix' from garden stores, otherwise use a mix of about 60% potting soil and 40% sand or perlite). Put the section into the soil so that the base is under ground so it can grow some roots, give it a light watering when you put it in and then maybe water once every couple of weeks until it gets established then you can water it more.
And as for the bottom section well it might be fucked already but you can try letting the soil dry out a little and then make sure that your not overwatering it or keeping it in a dark/humid place cause that can cause rot.

I would say you cant save that... but i'm very pesimistic.. Looks like it got tooo wet.. i kill succulants all the freakin' time because I keep them around my other plants and they accidentally get sprayed when I am watering.

By the way, I believe that is a Lithop or a living stone. They are very beautiful and I have been working with a source from South America who claims he has a species of lithops that are suppost to be just like sceletium in effects, but much stronger.

I see no reason why the healthy portion wouldn't be able to set roots if it was removed and placed in better soil and dryer conditions.

If the rot spreads, it wont make it.

I'll leave it in a dry place to see if the rotted part dries.
If it doesn't, well, it was cheap anyways so i can always go get another one from the same place.

Went to see a few lithops pics, and in fact it bears some resemblance with some of them. They apparently are from the same family as sceletium is, which would explain similar effects.

Anyways, thanks all
