4 p.s.i. 118 degrees...HELP! Make That 2.5 p.s.i. 218 F
    #3097727 - 09/06/04 03:49 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,
Once upon a time, there was this jackass stove, with a microwave built into the top of it. Problem is, this pressure cooker wouldn't fit over the back burners...the front burner, only got the cooker to 118 degrees ( 4 p.s.i). And in the confusion, may have sat at this temp for a long time. Possibly an hour. Would this episode roach the 12 jars that were inside of it? Or, would somebody be able to try this process again tomorrow on a real stove? First post by the way...Thank you in advance!

PF Jars?

You might have got away with it if so. Its a bit touch and go.

I would have been tempted to do them more like 2 hours at that pressure.

That sucks! Eventually the flame will heat the metal enough, but what kind of oven has the stong burners in the back? It's usually the strong in the front. after a while, when you touch the weight, does it release pressure? If it does just leave it on for mad hours. You will have to experiment with what works. Let the jars sit a few days and if they contam still, try adding a half hour to the cooking.

You could always cook it over a friend's house too. Promice them an eighth if you succeed (if neccessary).

Remove the microwave's air filter if it is at the bottom of the thing. Mine is and it is very common to be there. Removing it may give you just enough space.

If you are using grain only, consider fractional sterilization(http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23372). If you are using PF jars,4 psi should be adequate, just let is sit for 2 hours or so.

I think he is talking celcius. but 118 C is 15 psi tho , maybe your measure thing is broken and you read off wrong psi.

I hate doing celcius conversions and refuse to do them anymore...
Every Hvac test i ever took required that and i allways disliked doing them because i never had to do that in my 30+ yrs of hvac work

Oh boy, I posted the wrong temp in the subject and post of this thread. I was actually cooking at 218 F, which looks like about 2.5 p.s.i! Sheesh. More brain damage please! This is my first grow. PF jars. I wound up leaving them on the burner for 1 1/2 hours. I think I'll let these jars sit for a couple days and see where they go, as per MAGnum's suggestion. In the mean time, I think I'll prepare another 12 jars ( I had a lot of fun doing the first 12 BTW)! Maybe I'll send the lady downstairs to bingo, and jack her stove for a little while. The stove in my apartment is the kind with a flat surface. You can't actually see the burner element. 2 of the 4 do not work at all, and the only one I was able to set the pc on was really small. I appreciate the help over here! Thank you.

Well you could do another sterilization of another hour at 218F.

Personally at that temp, with PF and for an hour or two I would say you're probably going to be ok.

Its strange that you couldn't get it to temp anyway. I used a small burner for my PC back when I used to grow and it would eventually get up to pressure, I just had to wait a while which suited me because I had no intention of bringing up the pressure too fast anyway.

Alright, the bingo match is on. I've got access to a gas stove! utopianglory, thanks for the suggestion. I will be able to do another sterilization. My only concern would be that this first attempt dried out the substrate. Is that possible? This is a large pc. I just don't think the burner on my stove had enough go go juice. I sat it out for a while, hoping...

If the jar was covered well you should be ok.

Good luck.

The lids on the jar were loose, with tape over the holes, and tinfoil over the top. utopia, you mean I should be ok, as in "good to re-sterilize" because there shouldn't have been and lose of moisture inside the jars? Just checking. Thank you!

I wouldn't resterilize. You probably got them sterile the first time around. I've always had bad luck with resterilizing grain. I advise against taping the holes. It will create a vacuum in the jar, which will suck in contams. It will be ok if the lids are on loose and/or upside down, but it's not necessary to tape the holes.
