I am going to do some caseings with vermiculite and potting soil. what purpose dose the potting soil serve in the caseing???

Potting soil has some nutritional value for the shrooms but try to avoid soil with fertilizer added...too much nitrogen.

Why are you using it if you don't know what it does? Are you following a tek?

Most teks I've read suggest a non-nutrative substance for the casing layer. Like peat moss/vermiculie, coir fibre or even just straight vermiculite. The logic is that non-nutrative substances are less prone to contamination. The contams can't take hold because they have no source of nutrition.
