Quick help
    #3096175 - 09/05/04 09:52 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Used the search tool. No luck. This situation became an emergency relatively fast. As X is in the middle of a cooking session.

X has PC'd plenty of jars before but got a new PC recently. Was curious what are some indicators that the PC is running low on water. I'm just afraid that because I had to use less water than usual (I don't have a PC rack) it might run dry sooner. Also X is using rye which X has never done before and PCing time is longer.

Don't want the pressure coooker to explode.

How can I tell if it's running low on water?

Thanks

Yes there is still steam, I'll check to see if I can hear it.

It's early yet, but I'm worried about the home stretch.

We're talking two inches of water.

OK.... I just know if I boiled that much water in a regular pot it would be gone in way less than an hour.....

Does your friend have any clue about PCing. If your using a weighted regulator then you know how to free vent (3-5min.) the steam first to purge all dry air pockets once you have a good steady stream of steam you place the weight on and when it giggles (start timing) then you adjust the heat until the weight giggles only 3-5 times a minute? This is a very basic operation for a PC! You shouldn't lose more than a 1/2in. in 45-1hr. if you are doing things correctly. GL hope to hear from ya soon!

I guess it depends how you define a clue - yes he has used them before, but admittedly knows nothing about free venting. Please explain this tek I have never heard it.

This is what I got so far:

Once the lock pin pops up, you remove the weight. Then how do you know when to put it back on?

I have it rocking, but it is def more than 5 times/minute.

Thanks

Wet heat requires about half the time to sterilize than dry heat thus we purge the PC by allowing the steam to vent through the vent that you place the weight on for approx. 3-5min. Then put the weight on and wait for the first giggle turn your heat down until it giggles 4-5 times a min. and you'll have a much better clue! GL

So unless you just know about this tek (I've never read it in a standard tek before) you need to either start using it or increase PC time?

Wouldn't it seem?

You really need to just do it  I own 4 PC's and all the instructions include this tek as part of the instructions  This is just part of the learning process for newbies and experienced growers already know. GL ricelicker

Hyphae is right freesteaming is the way to go. Some manuals mention it, some don't.

Ae you also adjusting for your altitude?

No, I am not adjusting for my altitude, how did you know X happens to be above Mile High? Have been reading that thread though. It's funny, neither PC X has bought said anything about this tek in the manual.

So from what I read on the link posted in this thread I need to leave the weight off until steam is steadily coming out, then wait a minute, put on the weight and reduce heat until it slows to 3-5 rocks per minute.

This seems slow to me, because usually the weight rocks almost once per second.

What does that mean?

If you are above 1000 feet you should adjust for altitude.

>leave the weight off until steam is steadily coming out, then wait a minute,[...]

No wait 3-5 min. That's the freesteaming part. Most stuff I've read suggests a 5 min freesteam.

>usually the weight rocks almost once per second.

Reduce your heat until it slows to 3-5 per sec.

Place the weight on AND THEN  wait until it giggles THEN turn the heat down until it giggles 3-5 times a minute OR what ever your instructions suggest.

So the dude tried this venting tek. He let steam come out with the rocker off until the pin locked. But the rocker stil rocks about once per second, even on low.

What is he doing wrong?

Perhaps you have a strange pressure cooker. Please post the details of it and I'll try to help.

It just may be the way your particular PC is designed. Now realize that it takes awhile for the internal temp to drop and it just isn't going to stop rocking just because you turned the heat down, and may even take a minute or two but it will stop rocking believe me.

He turned it down to low and it rocks just as fast - for the entire cooking time. He adjusted the heat when he put the rocker on, and it was rocking just as fast at the end of the hour.

He couldn't really stand to leave the rocker off much longer after the pin locked. The idea of quick rise in pressure made him cringe.

Details? It's 8qt. Its an Elite brand by Maxi-Matic. Dude got it from ebay. Seems to work fine except for this rocking issue.
