Agaricus mushrooms found. ID?
    #3095742 - 09/06/04 02:02 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

found these mushrooms in growing in the grass in a field.
spore print: brown
appears to be yellowing a little in spots from sitting in the fridge for a day. also the gills were pink but are now turning slightly brown.
they appear to be agaricus campestris, but would like a second opinion?

You've got the Agaricus part right, as far as species goes... No clue.

What does it smell like? Smash it between your fingers and describe the smell. I'm merely curious, the smell won't nail down the identity, it can help.

Is that red bruising on the cap furthest to the right? If so, it's likely not A. campestris

thanks for the link, but i still am unsure. that is not red bruising , that is the end of the stipe which was pulled from the soil and is somewhat deteriorated from bug infestation.
there does not appear to be any bruising and the smell is odorless.

To check for bruising in Agaricus, cut one in half vertically then scrape the inside with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the tissue. Any color changes can take up to an hour. One important place to watch is the inside of the base of the stem at the very tip.

The main places to check the odor are at the top and bottom of the stem. If you don't get any odor detected, try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers and sniffing some more.

Happy mushrooming!
