sorry if this is the wrong forum or whatever, but im excited
My first grow attempt failed miserably after 2 weeks of showing nothing. I analyzed what I did wrong and came to several conclusions. 1) Humidity was making my already too wet WBS even wetter disallowing the spores to germinate 2) my incubator was doing more harm then good the way i had it set up 3) the jar lids weren't doing their job of keeping water and contaminates out
This grow I used just tyvek on my jars instead of cotton+lid, and configured a better incubator. I used rye berries and drained them VERY well. I just checked on the jars 4 days after shooting with multispore syringes, and EVERY jar is colonizing well
thanks shroomery!

mainly because i've read for over a year about different teks. I felt I understood grain and liked the process more... after my first mistake, what am i out? a cheap bag of WBS? I don't think everyone needs to start from the beginning.

Actully fred using birdseed is way easy I think. You can find it anywhere. It requires no formula or any mixing. And it makes great shrooms.but mabey I am just used to taking the other side of the coin

It's the hardest substrate I've grown on, of course I didn't try all that hard.
>You can find it anywhere. It requires no formula or any mixing.
You could say the same about rye and even brf. PF formula only has one more ingredient than rye or wbs.
I guess if you aren't too concerned about failing WBS is fine. Personaly after reading all the teks for a year or so then buying, waiting, and worrying about the syringe, I wanted to make damn sure that it worked the first try. I didn't want to have to wait another month or two for my first trip if I failed.
Then again, PF was about the only thing that was around at the time.

oh and just so ya know, I DID in fact strain my original WBS... I just didn't strain it >enough< I followed the teks to the letter, its just that there are certain parts that become ambiguous when you actually try it.
Once you realize the correct way, it seems painfully obvious what the correct water mixture, etc. should be. Reading the teks is a great way to get an idea of how to do it, but only when you do it yourself and figure out all the little details and kinks can you actually know whats going on.

Is WBS cheaper than rye?
I've seen 50 pound baggs of WBS for fairly cheap, but I never did any sort of price comparison.

I think the 10 pound bags of WBS at walmart were like 2.50$
I got the rye at a whole foods store for 7$ for ~12pounds. A cop gave us a funny look when he saw us giggling and scooping up pound after pound of rye into bags though...

I get 50 pound bags of rye for 27 dollars. I think it is the prime beginners substrate if you feel comfortable skipping the PF Tek. But if you like WBS

Maybe cotton has fallen out of favor, but it used to be used all the time to plug test tubes before polyfill. I've never used it, but I've seen several places where they describe using it.
I didn't say it was a good idea, only that it has worked for people and AFAIK it does work.
