The Power of Chili!
    #3095040 - 09/05/04 02:50 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

(changed the name of the post based on my post below).. Very interesting plant we have here.

I have a bunch of those long red chile peppers. I'm more of a chemist than a cook so I already extracted some semi-pure capsicin for use in friend warefare. Anyways I'm really anxious to make some sort of hot sauce or something with these. I'm looking for something maybe relatively easy to make, some concentrated hot sauce or something along those lines. I dug through all my recipe books but couldn't find anything that pleased me. Does anyone have any easy to make recipes for hot sauce?

thank you.

ohh make hot sauce, chilie con carne, and ohhh salsa

dry some up and grind them up and use on pizza/pasta/whatever

I don't have any recipies, but I'd assume if you soak them in some viniger with some garlic and other spices, that would be good.

The amazing power of Capsiacin!! [Re: gdman]

Did anyone see that show on the Food Network the other day with the Pepper Festival in Texas? They featured that amazing product that comes out of KCMO called "The Source" that is 7.1 scoville units..

Capsician is very appealing to me , being a drug addict, as it produces so much pain/endorphins.. I find it to be the lazy man's runner high  I've noticed among the geek/progger/hacker community a trend in the combination of capsiacin and caffiene combinations.. Chocolate candies with heat, etc.

You know the Spanish Fly available in the united states is nothing (in most cases) more than Capsiacin extract? It has some nice health/CNS/Immunostimulatory effects. The ability for this food to release endorphins , indirectly as a result of the action rather than by acting upon the synapses and receptor sites, is fascinating and very appealing.

I pulled out my Merck index and did a basic extraction using acid/base + Gravity filter and pulled out some very clean and pure looking crystals from my Hot Peppers. Curiousity got the best of me so I took a very small crystal, (gotta be in the microgram range) and lightly touched it against my tounge only to be in extreme pain. I would imagine this material could be very dangerous in the wrong hands as it is some potent stuff.

I understand that hot peppers themselves do not produce any tissue damage when ingested but I am curious as to the damage capable by a semi-pure extract of hot peppers? Is there an LD50 for this chemical?

I'm also curious as to the extraction method used for making "The Source" as I would find this very enjoyable to reinact.

I think it depends on how high the scoville is. I know there is pure capsicum powder, 2,000,000 scoville units and you have to have a license to buy it. it will also cause injury if you come in contact with it at that high of a concentration.

I saw that show Aneglakya ! It renewed my interest in hot sauce and hot peppers. "The source" stuff seemed really nasty though, it was black/blueish and thick like molasses... that is a manufactured chemical burn.

Its meant to be an additive... like if you want to put some heat in your chili and don't want to change the flavor.

christ! can you imagine the death from oral ingestion (assuming)?

i'm sure you would vomit and that would hurt and i'm sure your skin would feel on fire and probably your rectum. i'm certain in your death throughs you would manage to get it in your eyes. a very painful death i would imagine.

i would be suprised if it is actually lethal tho.
