How often to fan?
    #3094648 - 09/05/04 10:31 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I am not sure how often i should be fanning the cakes, last time I was fanning them way too much and it was never too moist in there.

In my opinion you should fan at least 3 times daily

:wtf: steph that is horrible advice
you need to fan at least 2 times a day
although i usually fan like 5 or sometimes more
although try and keep them at least a couple hours apart
air exchange is very important!
if your moisture is low, try misting more
or adding more perilite to your fruiting chamber

A CO2 drainage hole will help. Then I don't even fan at all really.

Post about your last grow... I'm interested in reports of over fanning.

Despite the fact that hyphae advocates nearly constant fanning, this method has always worked for me. Don't your arms get tired hyphae?

Ok one more time heres the facts, the more fanning the better (fresh air exchange) as long as moisture is replaced. Fanning also creates transpiration which is the vehicle that water uses to enlarge/mature your mushrooms. Now actual fanning may not be required as long as the casing has evaporation to a degree (perfectly automated systems). Also this is optimum for massive yields but not necessary as in invitro which are very poor pinsets but invitro wasn't developed for optimum growth anyway. Like in nature mushrooms thrive in a "near saturation" environment and the endless amount of fresh air that nature provides especially in a foggy environment is the best that there is hands down which also keeps contams at bay. One more thing about fog is that it can provide all the moisture needed for pinning without harming developing primordia it's a very beautiful thing to watch. My suggestion is to fan as often as you can with a fine misting AFTER each fanning. GL

I know this is a dumb question but for fanning you should just use a book or something, or an actual fan? lol

Also, I get the impression that frequent air exchange helps to prevent contams that enjoy stagnant air...correct me if I'm wrong. It seems worth investing in either an air pump or cool mist.

I had 6 cakes in a cooler with perlite and water and was having a hell of a time getting any pinning or any action at all for that matter. I had one cake that had a 1" shroom that grew and then died. I was fanning and misting, but obviously was failing some where along the line. Being frustrated - I gave up and put the cooler in a corner and moved on to bigger and better things. I came back in 2 weeks to clean the room out and was going to clean up the cooler too. To my suprise - when I opened the cooler lid there were about 20 huge over grown shrooms. The stems were huge and bloated. I guess even a squirrel can find a nut - LOL!!

Hyphae may think it's funny to laugh at you when you fail using his advice, but I don't think that's cool at all.

Another case of over-fanning causing a failure. And another success for the neglect tek.

Why, are you using a shoebox size bin?

Just get a bigger bin and you won't have to fan any more than once a day IME.

Well, last time I would fan nearly every two hours and it let all the moisture out and the cakes were drier then they should have been apparently.

A C02 dranage hole... is that just a hole in the lid?

I would say fan as often as you can whilst keepin the humidity up

I use perlite in the bottom and run an air pump in there so its constantly "Fanning" and the humidity stays right up where it should.

Works out great for me since all the work i have is the harvesting.

Maybe you should write something instead of just posting icons. It sure looked like he failed because of using your contstant fanning method and then you laughed at him.

So, are you saying that your first grow failed from overfanning also?

Don't get upset when nonsensical messages are (mis)interpreted.

No FF not over fanning but the frequent newbie mistake of over loving your shroomies to death (to much intervention) He didn't use my method because if he did he would have succeeded more than likely  You cannot just do part of a strategy an expect results you need to follow ever word and more importantly pay fucking attention. I'm having a hard time believing you could even grow athletes foot fungus FF! You are too caught up in something, I haven't put my finger on it yet but I can see that your are definitely not seeing the big picture :frown: It is sad but ya know what better you than any other genuine newbies here sorry to say. I do wish you the best and hope you experience one of lifes many enlightening eye openers (experiences)

I'm immune to athletes foot fungus.

My days of growing shrooms are long past, but I've given enough away and helped enough growers get started that I will never want for mushrooms. I still have interest in conducting some experiments though.

CO2 is heavier than most other gasses so no, not in the lid. Somewhere lower like on the side, preferably lower than where your cakes are if possible without of course letting water out. Think dry ice, and how the visible CO2 fog always clings to the floor.

Thanks for the kind words, both of you.  I strive to be clear and accurate as I can be, without being confrontational or condescending.  Note it would have been much easier and made me feel more powerful had I said "no, dumbass, do you actually have no concept of how CO2 behaves?" which was probably my first instantaneous thought - but that helps no one.

Of course if it's real obvious that a newb didn't read at least something resembling the FAQ or searched the posts, I will be more terse, but still generally helpful (as in pointing out a thread where it had already been well explained, or where exactly in the FAQ to look).

Plus an advantage is I can type verbage ad infinitum, with nearly correct punctuation and stuff, almost easier than I can talk in person to someone.  Most of the time this only gains me an "OMG U type lots" reaction but it is more important to be clear (and less concise) than to assume someone else knows what you're thinking.  People used to hate me at work, because if I sent an email it generally was well explained (meaning, several paragraphs).  Something like this post, as an example. LOL
