What on earth are these?!
    #3094355 - 09/05/04 10:02 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

These are mean looking!
Caps: Bright yellow, cone shaped at first then broadening out. Slightly sticky on picking.
Gills: White, yellowing with age. Can't tell spore colour.
Stalks: Yellower at the top, getting whiter at the bottom. 10-15mm thick.
The shrooms stain purple/black when bruised.

Is the spore print white? What did it grow off of? What trees was it near (if any).

I also think it is Witches hat or hygrophorus conicus AKA hygrocybe conica, but that is put into question by how yellow they are. Usually witches hat is orange to red.

Wait till Toxic man shows up because he is a pro.

Some of the caps were indeed orangeish. Mostly in the younger, cone shaped specimens. I haven't taken a spore print, but by the colour of the gills I'd expect it to be white or yellow. Thing is, I have no dark paper.
I did the research, found a lot of mixed views; poisonous, edible, hallucinogenic, the lot. Either way, they're a pretty damn cool find and awesome to look at.
It was growing in a field that normally contains sheep. Trees near them.. lots of Hawthorns in the hedges. I'll go out tommorrow and note any other trees.

I found these last year around October. Some of them looked really cool, they we're almost multi-colored with yellow, blue, and even green all over it.

Yeah some of the ones I saw were green, the very new ones. Didn't pick those, left them to grow and make more.

They are considerred a hallucinogen, however they have caused 4 deaths in China. You can probably OD on them if your not careful. Wait till Anno or Toxic man comes on and tells ya. I'll try to post what pics I have of them.

It looks like a good find!

Well, put em on white paper and if they match the paper, you have a good find. But still wait for a professional's confermation.

That means don't sell these shrooms and keep them all to yourself.

Seriously wait for someone who knows more to ID them better and tell you a dosage.

It's Sunday so alot of mods don't need to be on the comp.

DO NOT consider eating these mushrooms. They are NOT hallucinogenic and ARE poisonous. I'm surprised a mod has not stepped in on this one.

No, I wasn't about to risk that.

not active, considered toxic, however most importantly, and conclusively not a psilocybin/psilocin containing mushroom. so there is no reason to risk it, just because some sources say its active does not mean its true.

National audubon says:
"Also known as Hygrocybe conica. Although eaten by many people, this species is reported to have caused 4 deathes in chine; some beleive it is also hallucinogenic."

The death reports are almost a century old, and there haven't been any since. They probably shouldn't be considered very reliable. If they are poisonous, they will probably fall into the general gastrointestinal irritant category. Note that that category includes nasty mushrooms like Chlorophyllum molybdites, which causes very nasty poisonings.

In general, Hygrocybes aren't something worth eating. None of them are listed in my books as choice edibles, and descriptions I've heard from people who tried them indicate that they are nasty to eat.

Happy mushrooming!
