Pacific Northwest Mushroom Foray!
    #3093087 - 09/04/04 11:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Yesterday @cro and I went for a hike in the woods up near Bellingham, and this rainy weather sure has brought up the mushrooms!  We are unsure of a few ID?s so any input is welcome!

To start off, these LBMs have been popping up by the thousands not only in the Seattle area, but up near Bham as well.  They?re usually on the forest floor but these guys happened to be on a decaying log.  The mycelium is very thick and seems to be slightly yellow.  The spore print seems to be a shade of brown.

These mushrooms were beautiful, with a sparkly looking cap and growing near pine trees.  I don't care for an ID I was just sharing these ones because I thought they were pretty!

Here is a healthy looking cluster of very purple mushrooms growing off the end of a stump, I have no clue what they might be!

And here?s a big orange polypore, could this possibly be Laetiporus sulphureus?

We stumbled across pounds worth of these agaricus mushrooms.  If they are any kind of edible, I would love to know since there were so many!  They were growing on forest floor right in the middle of the trail.  They have a very mild smell; not anise and not phenolic.  It stains light brown when the stem is cut in half.

Here's a shot of the gills on a larger one:

Here I am filling my pockets full!

We also found these mushrooms which we think are a species of Paxillus growing off decaying log:

We found a bunch of Wood Ears, too!

Here was the coolest find of the day, oysters!!

Closeup of a cluster:

That's all for now, I'm sure with this weather will continue bringing up the fruits in the PNW!!

:sun:

"And here?s a big orange polypore, could this possibly be Laetiporus sulphureus?"
It most likely is, although a bit too far gone for most tastes. The outer edges might still be tender, but I doubt it.
Anyway, great pictures! I miss Western Washington's incredible diversity.

those arent boletes, actually, they are a species of Agaricus. If anyone can offer any insight as to whether or not they are a decent edible, that would be great!!

The info for them are in the original post!

Thanks for the replies... the mycena's were certainly beautiful!

mj--am definitely looking forward to kingston!!

wow, great pictorial there

that is most definitely Laetiporus sulphureus/gilbertsonii/conifericola, but as was mentioned, it looks a little past it's prime.

the supposed wood ears look more like turkey tails to me (trametes versicolor or a related spp.), but I could be wrong.

the agaricus looks like what I ID'd last fall as A. praeclaresquamosus, seems a little early for them to be around, but it's a possibility.

nice oyster log too

DH

are those Agaricus edible?  There was just so many it would be awesome if they were!

yeah @cro thinks they are Wood Ears but I'll have him check out the possibility of Turkeytails...

thanks! :sun:

uggggghhhh my stupid computer is messing with me, I have to log in like 3 times to reply cause I keep getting logged out for some reason :\

but if those are the agaricus species I'm thinking of, they're poisonous.
