I don't think that perlite will hold enough water to work well.

Has anyone tried shredded sponges or anything like that?

P.S. I gave you a 5 shroom rating to help you get started.

Perlite works but, you would be better off going to the store and getting some birdseed or whole grain brown rice if you can't find verm.

shredded sponges, shredded cardboard, perlite, even charcoal has been reported to be used. i've seen successful perlite and cardboard jars, the others were just stuff people posted without results.

Unfertilized jiffy mix works great. I have had less contams with that then with verm.
Potting soil, works in a pinch. Again... no fertilizers.
Ground corn cob, You will need to pre soak this. It is slow to take on water.

You could go with whole grain, Or even pasta. check the grow logs.

Rotini and mushrooms

i think ill go with corn cobs or whole grain rye W/coffey grounds have yall seen the results there getting in the advanced cultivation quit impressive. i took a long break from my hobby the other day i was out back and saw an old pile of my spent stuff wondered if i could take alittle of it put it in a jar W/ Water threw some grounds in and myc surely did take off nothing was sterilized and i came out with no contams how cool it was a small scale expierment and dont plan on trying to isolate the strain as for it was a very slow one as far as fruiting went.

i've been trying perlite and BRF, and so far I have a jar that's colonized about 25%. It took a long time to start colonizing (over a week), as well as 3 of 4 jars got contaminated. I've started using tyvek, and it gives good enough air exchange for me, plus it's free at the post office!

I wouldn't reccomend perlite and BRF though, you have to reduce the amount of water you put in in the mixing stage.

Oh, BTW, if you need some vermiculite, just PM me, I'll send you some and we can work out the details. I bought a 17 lb. bag not to long ago because I use it frequently while making soil for a few cacti I care for. I have lots of extra, so just let me know, and I'll be glad to send you as much as I can ship for $5.

Check these places:

Walmart: Lawn and Garden Section
Busy Beaver
Big K-Mart
Agway (if one is around you)

Good luck! Vermiculite shouldn't be too hard to find, but most of the people who work in the stores it's sold in will give you a dumb look when you ask for it. Tell them it's for retaining moisture in soil, and they can usually lead you to the right section of the store.
