Awesome post P#1... Very informative.
Still creeps me out a bit though. I think I would try spraying, since I have some spray on hand. I never had enough of a problem with bugs to have to do anything more than clean out the chamber.
Is there any kind of bug that eats contams?
You got me thinking about your contam research... Pretty cool stuff. Have you ever thought of trying to isolate a bacteria that attacks any contams? You could also look for viral plaques growing from contams... Having a virus to attack certain contams would be an amazing advance!

I would advise against spraying... if you do decide to try and find something thats been tried and proven, commercial pesticides are a bas idea, possibly try a smoker like bee keepers use with both green and brown leaves... I dont know what the effect on the mushrooms would be but it's most likely only detrimental to the flies.

none that I'm aware of... most will introduce contaminant or be considered a contam.

Fungus gnats can be quite hard to get rid of. The gnats you are seeing may have several sources and most often there is a secondary source that needs to be dealt will before your extermination efforts will pay off. Many times fruit lying out or a forgotten bag of potatoes perhaps, One source which is common is in the basement under the sewer basin cover many times these will be crawling with thousands of fungus gnats. A stronger bleach/water solution will kill them quickly then those yellow fly strips can be used as a very good indicator of whether your exterminating efforts are effective or not. GL
