Anyone used pure oxygen?

Has anyone tried pumping some pure oxygen into jars, bags, or their fruiting chambers?
I imagine someone must have tried this, since it wouldn't be too hard to do.

Pure oxygen is a strong oxidizer, I would imagine at high concentrations it would be toxic to mycelia. This I cannot prove however. It would also be an extremely high fire risk as well, as things can spontaneously combust in its presence...
For the fire risk alone I think it would be a very bad idea...

I don't think wet rye is going to catch fire even in pure oxygen. The mycelia should also quickly start converting it to CO2.
Plenty of old folks also seem to use it without too much problem.
I'll test it out someday, and report back. If I don't you'll know it was too dangerous.

things around you could... oxygen isnt explosive or flamable but it acts like a catylist in combustion, it make is a dangerous gas.

do you have any information regarding the conversion rate for psilocybe mycelium to convert oxygen to carbon dioxide... how are you gonna set your flow rate to something acceptable...
oxygen will dry out the casing/cake surface. it'll be much like overlay but a bit more of a hassle

It's not the oxygen fastfred it's the lack of co2 think of it that way Also we breath very little oxygen (21%) here on earth compared to nitrogen (78%). Also the fire hazard is an issue although not really too bad in the diluted levels that you are suggesting. It would still be an experiment and ya just never know unless ya try!

I suppose the fire risk is all in how you use it...

Well I will won't disagree with you that pure oxygen is not explosive. I Have been a welder/fabricator for 23 years. and I have sat thru alot of classes. Both welding and shipping classes required for QS9000 Standards. And I can say without doubt that pure oxygen is treated just like propane,acetelyne,etc...To say pure oxygen is a catylist is a serious understatment. Pure oxygen from a cutting torch is capiable of burning thru 12 inch or more of steel without the aceteleyne gas, that is once the cut is started.
Pure oxygen should always be treadted just like any explosive.
Just to be safe.

I' do a bit of welding as well, learned form one of the best, he says exactly what you have and aparently I'm damned lax in what I do... dumb on my part. maybe I should start using what I learned...

Yes the first time you experience leaving the torch valves "almost" off and you come back after lunch and spark it up ......POW the extra oxygen floating all around you blows up. an dyou will learn the difference between a oxygen explosion and a oxygen/actet explosion. It is like comparing night and day. An exploding oxygen cloud is a very bad day. Becarful

What was your method? I was thinking of using it to inflate bags or to replace the air in a sealed jar of rye...

Just don't let the gas build up into a pure cloud without being fully aware that any flame introduced into the gas cloud will explode/flash flame in your face. Don't smoke a joint when around pure oxygen clouds. While the probability of an explosion is small. If it happenes it will be very violent and could result in death.

I've been welding for 18yrs. myself and learned first hand very early in my career about how dangerous not having a valve completely shut off A 30+yrs. veteran welder was making a burning barrel when he took lunch after cutting the top out and made a few holes around the sides anyway he hung the torch inside the barrel and took lunch. He then came back and decided to make a few more holes and when he blew that first hole through that was it he was gone! After 30yrs.!!! So shit can always happen even to the most experienced never take anything for granted I've lived with this mishap for 17yrs. and it's a sight I hope no one here ever has to witness

I read somewhere that a properly mixed oxy/acety gas cloud has the same explosive power as nitro. And after years of fucking around with Baggie bombs I fully agree.
Sorry to hear about your freinds untimly death.

I did a series of tests to compare the effects of supplementary O2 vs. air. All the jars were made according to PF-Tek. The test jars were packed inside a glovebox purged with Aviator's Oxygen, taped lids placed lose, and foil on top. They were placed in a large lobster boiling pot which was also purged with O2 and covered with a non-airtight lid. The pot was brought to a gentle boil and the jars were steamed for 70 minutes. Next, the heat was removed and the pot was quickly opened and purged again with O2, then covered. This was done so that as the jars would suck in O2 instead of air as they cooled. When the jars were cool enough to handle, the lids were tightened, the pot was purged again with O2, then allowed to cool overnight. The control jars were made the same way minus the O2. Both sets were inoculated, cased, and fruited side by side. Although one sample isn't enough to conclusively show a result, I could find no difference between the two sets. -Diploid Edit: typo

This is not based on experience, but rather my VERY basic understanding of the fuels in question... Pure oxygen would not work for cars like nitrous because of the flame speed. It would be too fast and require an engine block built like a tank. Also, I can't imagine anybody wanting to ride around with a tank full of pure oxygen.

Yeah, I cant remember exactly which one it was, but one of the Apollo Rockets was burned, you would have seen it at the start of the movie Apollo thirteen, they put pure oxygen throughout the cabin, and one flick of a switch, and something made a minor spark, which then turned into a major explosion.
I know you are already aware of the dangers of pure oxygen but I thought id just tell yas that for anyone who didnt know.

Yea, that was Apollo I in 1967. A swift end to pure oxygen environments in shuttle cabins.
