humidifying using a cool mist
    #3089419 - 09/03/04 11:25 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I was just wondering if there was a problem with just putting the cool mist humidifier in a martha stewart type terrarium instead of running hoses. What would be some of the pros and cons?

Excess water build up would be my main concern. The coolmist humidifier sprays water out, sometimes a considerable amount. A way around this would be to install a PVC drainback tube, with a turn in it. Excess water droplets will hit the bend, and drain back into the humidifier.

I do not know how the high humidity will affect the internal components though. It could cause them to rust (motor). Another problem would be a mold or mildew growing on the filter, which could be removed in this case I suppose...

I think it would be best to operate it outside the chamber, but then again I am not a big fan of the coolmist. It works fine for smaller chambers, but in the case of larger ones (martha stewart style), it is only adequate for air exchange... Look into an ultrasonic if possible...

could you just put the ultrasonic inside or is it the same deal as a cool mist?

That's what I'm wondering as well. I am planning to use the 60 inch wide portable closet so it should be plenty big enough to handle the moisture the cool mist puts out. Hopefully the pros will show up soon and put our minds at ease.

but in the case of larger ones (martha stewart style), it is only adequate for air exchange... > In the case of the Martha this is true. If you put the humidifiers in the chamber you better fan it out a lot or use fans for air exchange get use to low pinsets and the typical stuff that comes with low air exchange during fruiting.

If you don't want to screw around with pipes, hoses and valves and stuff do this...get one of those xmas tree timers or just anykinda outlet timer and run it for like 2-4 hours per day inside your closet...thats what I do. You gotta experiment with it and see what timing gives you just the right amount of humidity, where it gets beaded up on the walls but will dry up by the next misting.

I do have a HEPA going also to crush any mildew created by excess humidity, and I spray down with lysol once per day. I still think I need some kind of venting, I think I am going to attempt to mount an 80mm fan on the side of my lab.

Hey thanx guys, as far as not putting enough humidity in the terrarium I am planning on using a vicks vaporizer as well. I was gonna run the cool mist for one hour every 4 hours and run the vaporizer(as well as a fan) every 8 hours so that the cool mist and the vaporizer are in sync every 8 hours. So that put's the air exchange at every 8 hours( I will use an outside vent to suck the air in from the fan that comes on with the vaporizer. Does this sound like it will be enough?

I would say thats probably going to be too much, I had my vicks vapo running just 5 hours per day and it made things waaay too wet.

So I guess it's a big negative on putting inside the chamber then.

No not at all like I said just get it on a timer and figure out exactly how long to run it.
