what the f*@k????????????

Here's my story I hope somebody can help me. Last night I noticed that on one of my cakes there was an insane amount of knots growing around the base of the cake (the part of it that was resting on the lid). So this morning I picked the cake up off the lid and look at the underside of it. Well much to my surprise on the underside of my cake there's about 6 pins that closely resemble a mushroom, they're about 1/4 inch in height and have heads (caps?) on them. They're all bent because they're growing from the side of the cake that was resting on the lid in my fruiting chamber. A bunch of the other pins are bruised due to the weight of the cake pressing them against the lid. My first question is why did all of these pins grow from the side of my cake that never saw light? My second question is will all of those bent and bruised pins actually grow into mature shrooms? If I had known 1 week ago that the pins were going to be growing from the bottom of the cake I would have rested it on it's top to begin with.

This happened to me also. By the time I found them they were rotten, though. Perhaps the pins formed before you put them on the lid, but were so small that you didnt notice?

maybe, I don't know what happened. This is my first grow. I didn't notice any signs of knots or anything until yesterday but I thought it was weird cuz all of the knots I did see were down where the lid was as opposed to the top of the cake. Much to my surprise when I picked it up and looked at the bottom I saw an insane amount of knots and about 7 pins, I'm just hoping they'll still grow. Guess it's a good thing I looked.

woodz I think you're right because I couldn't get all of the dry verm. off of the cake without damaging it so I left it there then set it right on the lid that had moisture on it from being in the incubator. I will borrow my brothers cam and take some pics and post them tomorrow.

what i do when that happens: if the pins are still good looking and they will grow and not abort then just lift the cake up with a few toothpicks or sumthing that have been alcoholed for a bit before hand - make it like a dude on stilts (see wicked diagram below) with a bit of thought it stands wicked and the bottom pins can reach full potential

they look good but they're bent from the weight of the cake resting on them (obviously) and a bunch of them are bluish (bruising). I guess what I want to know is: is the damage already done or will they be able to go on growing now that I flipped the cake? I guess a pic would be more helpful.

I agree w/ KaptKid, moisture collects on the lid, so that's where th shrooms grow, you don't need much light to trigger pin development, there's enough creeping under, especially when pins near the edge start to raise the cake a little.

You can get the dry verm off without hurting the cakes. Swab a plastic fork with rubbing alcohol and scrape away. It should come off easily.

So you're saying you have pins forming on the underside of your cake(s)?No prob.Fill the jar lid up with moist vermiculite and olace the cake ontop of the verm.I have alot of pins on the bottom of mu cake with a whole bunch more showing up.

Yeah, that's what I've got. I was getting all pissed because my cake wasn't pinning and it's been about 9 days so today I just checked the bottom of the cake to see if anything was going on and voila, jackpot

I had the same thing with my first harvest last week. Waiting for pins and at once some bigass mushroom was showing itself from under the cake. It was bruised but not rotten so I just flipped the cake upside down and all the pins became nice mature shrooms. Later also pins started to form on the other side so then I just put the cake on one side, keeping it balanced with some objects that I cleaned with alcohol.

When that happened to me to many times in the begining I got in the habit of birthing cakes upside down, With the verm layer up.
