"High-Bike"
    #3083814 - 09/02/04 04:52 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

My dad went through some old boxes of family pics and sorted out a stack to give to each of us (me, my brother, my sister) as keepsakes.  One of the pictures I got was me at about age 14 with my "High-Bike".

I built this thing out of 2 old bikes (one BMX bike and one 10-speed) and some scrap metal my dad had lying around.  I grew up with welders/tools/equipment and was encouraged by my dad to be creative.  This was the result one summer.  I rode this fucker all over Las Vegas that year.  It was funny as hell to see the look on someones face when you pull up next to them at a stoplight and put your foot on the roof of their car to balance yourself.  People wouldn?t even get mad that I had my foot on their roof, they were too astonished to see my bike!

That's an awesome bike! If you still have it, you should bring it out to Iowa some summer and ride it across the state with us. Nothing more enjoyable than checking out somebody's custom chopped bicycle.

Have you ever fall off that?

Sadly, the bike ended up in a trash heap in the late 80s. I've toyed with the idea of building another for many years.

I never actually fell off of it. I got really good at getting on and off. I could take a couple running steps alongside it and climb up to the seat real fast while rolling. And getting off was just a short jump to the ground. I always thought it would be a real bitch if I ever did fall off.

When I stopped I had to put my foot on a car or have a wall or pole to lean against, etc. If there was nothing to balance on I had to jump down. Thats why I got so good at getting on and off.

That is truly awesome! If you could build that when you were a kid, just imagine what you could do now! I encourage you to make another rockin' bike... and then bring it to Iowa and show it off at Ragbrai

There's a couple of those here in the city.
I see 'em downtown riding along with each other.
Very Cool.
