Every now and then in I will just stop, notice my surroundings, and realize that whatever I was just doing was totally unconscious and autopilot. Like I realize that the past was just a thought in my mind, and now it's gone. This is one of those moments where the time-oriented (past and future) ego subsides and the eternal (no-time) you surfaces and submerges into... THE NOW. As I've explained in S&P before.. The ego is very avoidant of The Now, and is always muddied up in the past or future.. both of which essentially are not in The Now, hence, do not exist. So with this in mind, it is no wonder that so many people often feel like they're in a dreamy/zombie/unawake life! Because they literally have their minds stuck in the past or future. This, is the disease of THINKING. The disease of the mind/ego. Let me ask you this: Can you completely stop thinking, ALL at once, into absolute stillness and silence mentally and verbally? Perhaps for a few moments or so.. but not very long, correct? Then the mind is using you. Read that sentence...carefully. The mind... ....controls you. Two seperate entities here. Hint: One of them, is the one that comes out into The Now in such peak experiences as you've described where you'd realize you were on 'auto-pilot'...and then drowned back into the incessant noise of the mind. You are unconsciously identified with it [the mind], so you don't even know that you are its slave. It's almost as if you were possessed without knowing it, and so you take the possessing entity to be yourself. Is there realy an awakened state or a way to live in order to feel like you are living and have lived and it's not all just a dream? The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not the possessing entity -- the thinker. Knowing this enables you to observe the entity. The moment you start watching the thinker a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a tiny aspect of that intelligence. You also realize that all the things that truly matter -- beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace -- arise from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken. "The Power of NOW" is a very good book. I suggest you read it.. as well as everybody here.

Thanks alot! Yeah, sometimes it feels great to be aware of the present, but sometimes it is a little disconcerting realizing the past, the thing which holds together all the continuity, meaning, and inertia of your life doesn't exist. The problems I have found with clearing my mind and being in the present are that it feels like my existence is deconstructed and doesn't make sense anymore and then I feel loss of control.
Most of the time when I meditate it is very nice. But if I ever let myself reflect on what I am seeing (esp. with pot) I can get a little bewildered.
I'm curious if anyone has managed to reconcile the mental forms of time, space, memory and meaning with the reality of the silent oneness? Can they coexist together?

i think its about the balance... you can't expect to simply forget about your thinking self! it'll always be there! you just have to figure out who's calling the shots and when...
