Casing Questions
    #3086420 - 09/03/04 09:40 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

More questions!

Anyway, Im inquiring about casing this time.  I am planning on casing a few of my cakes when they are complete, just to get a feel for it.  I figure if I fail, I lose 2 or 3 cakes, and if I don't, I could potentially have a great pay off.

So my question is, in  Casing 101 when he says

Quote:

As a general rule I believe a 1:4 ratio of  casing to substrate depth is used.

Does he mean what he actually says, or does he mean 1:4 ratio of  substrate to casing ?  I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but from what I've read in other guides and on this site, I thought there should be more casing than substrate.  I'm probably wrong though huh? =P

Also, is verm/coir 60/40 a good casing material for beginners?
(Note this is my first grow and casing)
(Further note, I will have 24 cakes soon started so 3 lost isn't much)

It should be 1:4 casing to substrate or for each 1" of substrate you use 1/4" of casing.

just plain verm is good for a first casing, you can experiment a little, the difference is minimal. casing 101 is a great pictorial casing tek, thats how I made my first cases and they went great! if theres one tip i have to offer which is: keep the casing layer thin and patch lots of times to alow a nice even myc breakthrough, good luck!

Thank you both for such quick responses!

Will straight verm provide as good of a yield as the verm/coir mixture?

I used straight verm for my first couple casings then went to 50/50 verm/peat

the straight verm casings took longer to colonize and fruit than did the 50/50

also the 50/50 seemed to colonize more evenly as well as pin more evenly. It could be that by the time i got to doing the 50/50 i was better at keeping the environment just right but it was probably a combination of the two

good luck!

further to that -

i dont know if you were going to do this or not but i use the 50/50 on the top as well as the bottom for a "double ended casing" effect.

according to this:

http://www.shroomery.com/index/par/7977

it should work better than verm on the bottom.

yeah the one thing im noticing on doing 60/40 verm coir mix is how the myc breaks through in a much more even way giving less patching.
