re-wetting perlite, how often?
    #3084870 - 09/02/04 11:47 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

how often should the perlite be wetted to keep proper humidity? my friend has had perlite in a rubbermiad for about2 weeks now, should she take it out and soak it down, or just mist it with a spray bottle? she thinks it is getting kinda dry because first flushes sucked, only 1 dry gram per cake.

You can mist it a little if you want, but you shouldn't need to. Just keep some water in the bottom of the tub and you'll be fine.

Water should be condensing on the sides and lid somewhat, if it's not then think about rewetting.

Here is how I check to make sure I have enough water in the perlite or how I used to check , we have a very nice humidity guage now.

If the side of the chamber are not wet, dripping wet at least 6 inches up the insides of the walls. Then perlite is too dry. But we discovered this isn't always correct because of room humidity levles. But this worked good for 2 years.

The fact that your flush sucked is a sure sign.

I still do use some perlight chambers  and now, every 5 days I take all the perlite out and resoak it in a big noodle strainer under the faucet.Which flushes out any contms. adn I think the high chlorine levels from our water is helping keeping it clean.

Misting will work but, redunking the perlite was the ticket for me because the cakes were not subjected to to much misting.

You can, but there's really nothing in the perlite for contams to grow on.

Yes or iodine too will work. Stagnant water will breed anaerobic bacteria.

1/2 inch of water or so isn't deep enough to breed anerobic bacteria. An inch might though. So I would try to keep the water level pretty low.

Sure it is, any standing water can. Why wouldn't it?

Too much oxygen near the surface of water. Anerobic bacteria usually only do well at the bottom of several inches of liquid.

I'll disagree on that one. I know DO (dissolved oxygen) content gets depleted especially when CO2 levels are high as they will be in our case, this is why we in the hydroponic field oxygenate our nutrient solutions. I've smelled tubs that sat and they don't smell too good IMO.

I didn't figure excess CO2 into the equation... Perhaps you are right. With a CO2 drainage hole, it probably wouldn't get all that concentrated though.

Plenty of aerobic bacteria will make a stink too.

ANY amount of standing water can support the breeding of anerobic bacteria... ANY AMOUNT!

Maybe facultative anaerobes and aerotolerant anaerobes, but not strict anaerobes.

Now wait, hold on....

Before I get a dozen flames for disrespecting authority, please everyone google "facultative anaerobes", "aerotolerant anaerobes", and "strict anaerobes".

Here is a blurb:
"Strict anaerobes cannot grow in the presence of greater than 5 micro M dissolved oxygen."

so what you are saying tis that perlite with a little standing water can infact support some form of contamination

and dont post a single line, it makes you sound like a 'hell fire and damndation" babtist preacher trying to prove a point, any thing removed from context in that manor can be viewed in a multitude of ways...

as soon as I can get into my new place, get my lab, microscope and camera set up... then I'll be back into full swing with my mushroom torture projects.

I'm really amazed at the amount of abuse that the little bastards can really take...

If you used distilled water I would think that there wouldn't be enough nutes to support any contams.  Algae would probably grow given sufficient light, but I don't see what else would.

If you used tap water as most people probably do... who knows?  I've seen some mildew grow on it...  That damn stuff seems able to grow anywere with no nutes!

Ha ha... That's pretty funny.  How about this for a sig...

"If you don't accept my writings as the word of god, not only will you fail, but your eternal soul will burn in hell forever."

Just kidding... :sun:
