I've been using Linux on and off for 4 or 5 years now, at the moment my PC is exclusively running Gentoo with a 2.6.8 kernel.
Who else here has moved on from Windows?

Good shit. Gentoo is awesome, at first I was a little nervous switching over the the "hacker's distro", but once I tried it I realized it's even easier to set it up the way I like it than any other one.

I am intterested too, but I'm not great with programming or stuff like that, si I don't know if it would be better if I stuck to windows.

Why not for filesharing? I've found that LimeWire works quite well under Linux, generally faster downloads and better search results than I was getting with Kazaa Lite in Windows.

limewire ain't that great IMO. giFT is better. i use apollon (a giFT client) for file transfers, it's finnicky, but if i can get it to work right, it connects to the openFT, fasttrack (kazaa), and gnutella networks.

yea, there's definitely some good p2p clients for linux but I use protowall for bad IP range blocking & dont really want go unprotected. Until its ported for linux, I use xp for filesharing.
@aje - there are a few soulseek variants for linux, namely Nicotine and Pyslsk and Museek. giFT has a plugin for soulseek: http://gift-soulseek.sourceforge.net

i moved on from windows to gentoo... gentoo is sexy
when i get my new laptop, it will run windows, but only because i need photoshop when i travel, and the interface with my Treo600 will be better... but other then that, its now a gentoo house, even on the old Ultra5

Meh, I used to run giFT before, and used it on the FastTrack and openFT networks (using Apollon as well), I always shunned LimeWire because when I've used it in the past, I could never find anything I wanted. When I downloaded it again recently, I found it's perfect. I've had way more success than with giFT.
Also, Apollon seemed to crash all the time.

It's not too complicated to block ranges of IPs in Linux...

can the method you refer to handle 2 billion+ IP addresses without using any CPU% as well as keep logs of granted/blocked packets? I've seen these methods: http://www.dessent.net/linblock & http://www.netfilter.org
but im worried that massive iptables might slow things down/use resources. anybody know?

I used to despise Limewire and other Gnutella clients,but lately I've been able to find just about anything using it. I also like Limewire's presentation. I hate opening 57 windows with other clients that aren't tabbed properly. I just hate how you have to run a Java VM to use it.

Thanks. I'm considering trying to run a dual boot system to see how I like it. What would you recommend for someone who's never used linus before? I figure that as long as I don't hate the look and feel of it from the very beginning (i.e. my attitude towards mac) I can always get used to it.
Also, as long as I can run winamp, some soulseek client, and a few other apps I would be fine with linux. I may keep a dual boot system for a while for Photoshop though.

if you want a taste of linux, you can download an .iso image from which you can create a bootable linux OS on CD. knoppix, a debian-based distro, allows one to do this. you just make the CD and you're good to boot from it. simple as that. the hardware support is fantastic and you can even use the CD to install knoppix to your hard drive if you like. that's what i've done and it's great.
some say that debian linux isn't really for beginners, but i think that may have more to do with the installation than anything else. it's really not that difficult though (including the install). i've heard that slackware, redhat, and mandrake are all good distros for those new to linux. i'd stay away from gentoo, though i'm sure others would disagree.
ps. in leiu of winamp, you'd use xmms on a linux box.
