Can I put my soil in an aquarium outside to grow..????????
    #3084372 - 09/02/04 07:38 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, so I've grown outdoors before but I'm just wondering, for the sake of saving myself some pain, could I do Moe's outdoor tek with a fish tank? could I do everything that's usually done in an outdoor grow in a fish tank, leave it outside with a screen on top to prevent the damn insects, and grow with the sun's help of killing microbes that'd cause contamination.

thank you

If you are in a hardiness zone less than 5, you could potentially still have success by letting the substrate colonize outdoor during the summer, and then move it indoor in a cold cellar when the temperatures fall under the freezing point.
Mobyd has done this the past 2 years and it worked well for him, here are the links:

Yes, you can do this.
The rule is to not over-water, the bed should be kept moist at all times for fast colonization , but don?t let it sit in water.
If you keep the bed moist, the colonization will speed up considerably. In drier conditions the colonization will take longer.
I had a couple of patches that I didn?t water at all throughout the very dry summer, and they still fruited, wood lovers are quite hardy.

as fugu was trying to say...

doing it outdoors in a fishtank is a great way to drown mycelium because it has no ability to drain, it also looses the ability to draw additional moisture from the ground

SOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo, if I make some holes and cover them with screens so the soil doesn't fall through and just water them whenever it starts looking dry.

Humidity is no problem but my question is will it work just as well in a fishtank, cut off from being eaten by rodents and insects, as to in the ground.
