Salvia tissue culture
    #3083800 - 09/02/04 06:50 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I was asking this question in another thread, and thank you "young but cool" for helping me out but I think this question needed it's own thread.

Ok...I'm thinking of ordering a Salvia tissue culture from http://www.mushmush.nl/?page=home/store/...dproduct_id=127 and was wondering, once it arrives, what do I have to do with it.  As young but cool said, they are extremely fragile and aren't like a cutting, and the site does give some information on how to grow it, but could someone help me and go into a little more depth? Thank you

You have to do nothing more what is written in page from link. I have one of these, and it grows nice. It isn't any hard to grow healthy plant from this culture. All you have to do is carefully follow step by step what MushMush recommends, like I did. Everything was alright: after a week, I saw new tiny leavs. Now I have quite big, healthy plant. I didn't use any fungicide(Thiram was unavailable, I got only Topsin, but didn't use that), just PC the soil. I really recomend you this Tissue Cultures. Thanks Una!

it looks lovely
mine did best in the washroom which had humidity and a skylight but no direct sunlight.
now it is in a darker area with a much bigger pot and not quite as happy. I think it misses the steamy showers and the skylight kind of illumination.
I used 1/3 perlite 1/3 vermiculite & 1/3 organic potting soil and not fungicide or additives.
(it is basically ok now but not quite as vigorous - my wife thought it was too big for the bathroom and gave me too much trouble - I have laid blame)

I got one of those TC salvias, and since I already had salvia growing I did a little experiment. I washed the gel off the roots, put it in my usual salvia soil mix, and put it with my other salvias with no gentle acclimatisation to low humidity etc.
The lower leaves did die, but the plant survived and is doing well :sun:.
I don't recommend that you shock it quite this much, but it shows that they are quite resilient things.
