Today's mushroom collection - Pics
    #3083289 - 09/02/04 04:58 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

Hello all,

I just got back from another one of my mushroom hunting adventures, deep within the woods of the northeast. I did not get to stay as long as i hoped but i found a few interesting things i would like to post. Sorry if a couple of the pics are out of focus, I'm still learning how to use my new camera (just bought it yesterday). I'm not really looking for ID's, but please feel free to correct any of my id's or help with some of the ones that i have not labeled.

These are pored shrooms that i found growing in the woods, in a shady area - on the ground/in wood debris. I beleive these are strobilomyces floccopus or "old man of the woods".

This pic is of some bleeding mycenas that i found growing from a decaying log. The stem actually squirts out a blood-red liquid when broken
(stains clothes pretty bad too btw!).

Another species of mycena found on a log.

I see a lot of these but I am not too sure what genus it belongs to. It grows from the ground usually near the bases of trees, it has white gills
and spores, and some traces of a veil.
They also have a enlarged base.

This little guy is pretty neat looking, i think it may be some species of hygrophorus, but I'm probibly wrong there, just a guess. It also has white spores
and grows on the ground

I am unsure of the species of this shroom as well, the cap is purple with a light brown center, usually viscid when moist and has a white stem,
grows on wood, and has a rust-brown spore print.

Here is a view of the bottom:

And here is a yellow coral fungus that i found growing from the ground.

Finally a white puff ball looking thing

Well, thats all for now. Enjoy!

Nice stuff.

Your first unknowns, with the yellow caps, are Amanitas. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of Amanitas that are similar to those, so an ID to species is quite a bit more difficult.

Your possible Hygrophorus is very probably just that. Again, there are a ton of bright orange capped species, so an ID to species is difficult.

The next one, with the rust colored spore print, is probably a Cortinarius. Most of them grow on the ground, but there are exceptions.

You should try cutting the puffball like thing in half to see what the inside looks like.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks, ToxicMan

Looks brownish inside, perhaps it is a little rotted.

All those are everywhere around here too, northeast also. No actives yet though. There are lots of orange amanitas with white spots, a bit like the ones you posted though it's hard to tell if those amanitas have white spots as the picture's a bit blurry, but some of them pretty strongly remember pics of Muscaria var Formosas I've seen. Not going to try eating them though

Cool pictures

National Audubon Society field guide says that it gets "unappetizing as it ages".

Yea, I read that they were edible also. I dont think i will be trying any though, they dont smell too good. I have actually never eaten a pored mushroom before, i think it would remind me of eating a sponge  :undecided:

The brown color inside is probably the color of the spores starting to mature. Once they start changing color they rapidly become inedible.

As far as eating "pored mushrooms" (ie, boletes), they are some of the best mushrooms for eating. They have thick, firm flesh when young and excellent flavor. The tubes can be peeled from under the cap, and generally are if they are at all soft or mushy. Boletus edulis has more common names than any other mushroom because it's found all over the northern hemisphere and popular as an edible everywhere it's found.

Happy mushrooming!
