Magash's Poor Man's Pod
    #3083169 - 09/02/04 04:30 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have a few questions in reference to Magash's "Poor Man's Pod" document located  here.

I should appologize for my ignorance as far as this subject goes, I'm a first time grower, and hope that it can be remedied through the great answers you all give to us who are less experienced! =P

Anyway, I have read in some posts that "Perilite" is used to raise the humidity of these chambers.  Would Perilite be an appropriate replacement for the geolite?  If not, please explain why, as I may have some trouble finding geolite.

Also, is there a depth you suggest I sink the hoses in the water to?  Or just generally near the bottom of the geolite will suffice?

I plan on putting my cakes on a piece of wire mesh (1/8") that stands around a quarter inch up off the perilte/geolite as well, or will the evaporated water that's rising off the geolite help my cakes moreso and increase my flushes if I lay them directly on top?  I am concerned about contamination.

Those are all the questions I have right now.  And thank you Magash for saving me the money on an ultrasonic humidifier.

Perlite will work just fine in place of geolite, but I use lava rocks instead because they are cleaner than perlite. Just rinse them real good before using and if you are really paranoid about contams, boil them to sterilize. I just did a bleach rinse on them and ran with it. I had no problems.

Go ahead and place your rack as low as you want. Your fruiting chamber should be a relatively clean environment.

Put your hoses on the bottom of the tub and then put the lava rocks, perlite, or geolite over it at about 2"-3" deep. You want your water level just covering your bubble stones and the lava rocks, perlite, or geolite to just be higher than the water level.

I use lava rock also, it can be found anywhere they sell fish, and much cheaper than the geolite...

I have a question. WIll running the airstones with perlite supply enough humidity to replace spraying? My first grow cakes (12 of them) are just about 100%. Also, will this device take the place of fanning?

Act from what I've been told by people using it perlite pretty much sucks in the pod. messy and seems to mess with the airstones or bubble wands. I suggest lava rock.

I agree that perlite is messy ass shit.  My friend has a lava rock layer with a geolite layer over that with 2 12" bubble stones in the bottom.  Its much cleaner and it looks a lot better imo.  He switched last week and its all good .  The humidity is doing better than the perlite also, it stays around 90% or better.  :goodluck:

I would have to agree with using Lava Rocks in place of Perlite. I have not been able to find Geolite or Hydraton either, so I had to go with the Lava Rocks.
