Are people just scared?
    #3083141 - 09/02/04 02:20 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

To use casings? I see such a high number of people, not just newbies but all experience levels that seem too shy to try a casing. People seem to think that cakes are so much easier but I've noticed I get a better yeild from a casing with 4 cakes than I would from those 4 cakes individually - and the additonal work is very minimal.

I was just wondering what the consensus is. Do you only use cakes? If so why? Have you ever tried a casing? If no why not?

If you put 4 cakes in a casing and it contams you lose all 4. If you keep them seperate and 1 contams you have 3 more to go. I think that's why they're nervous. I'm going for casing now though.

I dunno - i just started recently and have ONLY done casings. I read a ton before i started though and was fairly prepared for both success and failure.

I would guess most people spend more time and money than they are willing to throw away on something they are not familar with. Either that or they want to do step 1 (cakes) before moving to step 2 (casings) and beyond.

I guess the risk isn't worth the reward (to them)

It most definitely is a logical first attempt. But once you master or even just get a good grasp of fruiting from cakes, I recommend moving to casing ASAP. You won't be dissapointed.

There is a little more work involved...choosing a casing material, sterilizing it, cutting trays, etc. Thats probably what scares people off the most.
I personally would like to see more people using grains though.

Agreed, it is more work. But for me it was like this:

Oh casing? What's that/ What do people use? Oh verm? I already have that, good. They say you don't have to worry about sterilizing it. OK. I bought some cheap plastic trays and I was done. That was it.

You'd like to see more people using grains for what? Substrate?

What do you see them using instead? Even the most basic teks use brf right? What teks are there with no grain or grain flour?

But yea I am exciting about trying pure rye after reading (and watching) that post from Magesh.

PF Tek, straw, shit. I think he meant plain rye and what not like you saw in magash's post. I could be wrong though.

He was referring to grains... not grain flour. Popcorn, rye, millet, WBS, etc.

If you are going to case, then use grain(rye) jars. Casing cakes eliminates most of the advantage to using cakes, without giving you any of the benifits of grain.

Just use grain next time.

I think that for the newbie they should expect not so good results right off the bat.
That is because they are inexperienced. If they get fruits then great, they have done
a good job. But mushroom cultivation is kind of a learning process from
experimentation. I mean U may get lucky ur first try but they are cubes(most likely)
If u are doing it just for the trip then great, u accomplished what u intended.
But alot of people get these beutiful little buggers as part of theyre life style.
A hobby.
if ur doing it for a trip then stick with cubies cause they are easy.
but the others move on to harder species because they are intrigued and want to learn
as much as possible and test theyre skills and share theyre knowledge.

I first tried casings after reading tons and failed cause i underestimated the green mold
then i tried cakes next and failed too.
Then it struck me. Be clean....
After that i have had minimal problems cause i learned.
U learn from ur own mistakes.
thats the best way to learn. first hand experience.

I think people like cakes is cause they see the Entity as a whole.
there is no casing to hide it. U see where the mushrooms are coming from.
Just a thought i dont know.

People probably don't initially case because it requires some direct interaction with something that you have worked flat out to keep sterile.  The idea of handling a cake and crumbling it probably disturbs newbies.

Let me tell you though, its worth it just to smell them.. mmmm...

It also takes longer to have a casing fruiting and as we all know (having been newbies ourselves at one time) patience is not a virtue the newbie possesses in large quantites

I started my first grow about six weeks ago. Shot up a total of 40 jars and I used a about 20 for standard PF Tek, following everything to the letter. The 20 other jars I used for experimenting. Tried some casings which miserably failed due to contams and me not knowing what I was doing. The last 4 jars I had left I made in another casing. I borrowed a sack of potting ground from the neighbours and mixed a little verm in it. I sterlized all of it in jars and I made a new casing. I left it alone except for patching some myc because I read that was the way to go.

My first flush from my PF jars is harvested now and although I got enough for a few good trips, I was slighly disappointed by the yield. Then I looked at my casing this morning and I got a warm hearty feeling, since yesterday 20 pins have appeared and by the look of all the tiny white dots, it's going to produce a multitude of that. If this flush is turning out to be what it looks like, I'm definitaly going with casings from now on. I'll only keep a couple of standard PF jars because they are so nice for decoration in a terrarium in my living room.
