somebody told me the other day i could use dry rice as dessicant? anyone tried it? how long does it take to dry mushrooms using rice?

as bluemeanie said, salts are better but if all you have available is rice, then you need to air/fan dry them for a few days, bake your rice at 300 for 20 minutes and then use it... it may take another day or two to make them cracker dry

And I take it rice and salt (again what kind of salt? rock salt, epsom salt?) can just be used in the same way as any other dessicant? In a tub or container with a screen holding the mushies above it?

woolworths sells 250g and 500g bags of calcium chloide dessicant with a tub thing that goes in your wardrobe, or something. they're pretty cheap and work most excellently

You could also go to Payless shoe store and grab all of the dessicant bags out of a bunch of shoe boxes. I've almost considered that, but the loss of karma would suck.
