Plastic bin volume question
    #3081043 - 09/02/04 04:06 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I just bought a fish tank air pump for one of my bins. It delivers 1600 cc/min.
If I want to get the volume in cc (cubic centimeters) of my squared plastic bin to find how much time it needs to be working for an optimal air exchange, the formula is suppose to be LxWxH, right?
So, if my bin is 60cmx55cmx45cm=148500 cm^3, is this right? isn?t it a lot? Then, if I want to get the m^3, should I divide just by 100 or by 100^3 (1cm=100cm).
If it?s right, then the air pump will need to work non stop all the time and even so I won?t get the right air exchange, what do you think?

Hope it?s not off-topic

Thanks

you would want to get at least one full air exchange per hour... and at 1600 per MIN you would get 96000 cc/hour. You still have 52500 CC of air un exchanged per hour.

One air exchange per day is plenty.

I disagree, i prefer to give it at least 4 a day.

3-4 per day is optimal

Semilanceata, even with an air pump its still a good idea to open your terrarium a couple times per day to fan and mist.

When I used tubs, back in the day. I gave them ZERO air exchanges untill they flushed, then all they got was during harvest. I did use a dime sized polyfilled hole just above the perlite layer. Simply gass diffusion through that hole provided all the air they needed.

I don't mean to denigrate your methods, I'm sure that it works great for you, but you can get away with zero air exchanges and still have great results. I think it's better for first-timers to do it without fanning, because it reduces the chances of contams a tremendous amount if you are clean about it. If you introduce too many contams at the start then maybe fanning is better to limit the stagnant air.

Worst case is that you delay your pinning by a day or two. Remember, this is in a tub with a small volume of mycelia compared to the air volume.

i disagree. i think it's best for first-timers to follow the techniques to the letter, which means fanning for pinhead initiation, to reduce CO2 levels.

if you start off by learning bad habits, god help you when you try other species that are less forgiving than psilocybe cubensis.

fred, why don't you go visit www.sacredshrooms.org

Pan cyans is what I?m trying now, that?s why I?m getting paranoid about the fresh air supply.

Thanks.

I agree with following teks to the letter your first time. Not all of them include fanning though, some reccommend a hole for air exchange, which has worked fine for me.

As far as being a bad habit... I disagree. Following the CO2 draining hole tek is not a bad habit, in fact, it works great. In some respects it's even better than fanning.
