Physics Help
    #3080446 - 09/02/04 12:44 AM (13 years, 27 days ago)

I need some major help on two problems on my physics homework.

A ball is dropped from a 100 m tall cliff. How far does it fall during the first second? How far does it fall the second second?

An automobile slowly accelerates from a speed of 5 m/s to a speed of 20 m/s in a time of ten seconds. What is the car's average speed during this time?

Thanks!

1)
  a) 5 m
  b) the trick with this question is prolly the wording... so its 15 m, because you subtract how far it fell during the first second.

blah... i dont wana do all your homework for you  :grin:

the ball falls 9.8 m/s/s. then 19.6 m/s/s

Do you know the equation:

x = v(o)*t + .5*a*t^2?

distance = initialvelocity*time + .5*acceleration*time^squared

First question:

x = 0*1 + .5*9.81*1^2
x = -4.95 (add the negative when you finish because it's moving in the negative y direction)

Now try it for 2 seconds and try your car problem, then x / 10 s = average speed.

1) 9.8 m
2) 19.6 m
3) 17.5 m/s

The third one seems too easy to be right. Maybe I missed something.

Are you using an equation for 1 and 2 or just trying to reason it out? If the ball is moving 9.81 m/s after one second, that doesn't mean it travelled 9.81 m in the first second. It had to accelerate to get to 9.81 m/s, so the distance must be less than 9.81 (turns out it's half of 9.81 in this case).

Ah I'm stupid. 9.8 and 19.6 m/s would be the speeds, not the distances.

Answers:

1) 4.7 m
2) 19.4 m (total) or 14.7 m (just for the 2nd second interval)
