Can someone explain this system of voting and how it represents the people?

The Constitution of the United States of America is a constitution describing the nuts and bolts of a federal republic -- a federation of states.

There are three branches of government. Congress represents the people, so members of congress are elected by the people. The Executive branch represents the states, so the states (through the electoral college) elect the chief executive. Members of the Supreme Court are appointed rather than elected.

...it wreaks of bullshit. I dont understand why they cant just count votes and go from there? Does it really matter who the hell you vote for when in the end the electoral college ends up choosing anyway?
