quick question
    #3079186 - 09/01/04 08:32 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Okay, so I put perlite on the bottom of the terrarium to increase humidity, but while I was removing the cakes for transplant I realized that where the few baby shrooms that sprouted had doneso where the mycelium met the vermiculite. So my question is that by setting them on the new wet perlite and not the vermiculite am I at all deterring production?

I don't think so. I don't see any problem with placing them right on the perlite. AFOAF used to put his cakes on a piece of wire mesh that held them 1/4" off the bottom of the terrarium. He had a little tub filled with perlite and 1/2" of water sitting in the corner of the terrarium with an air pump for a fishtank running under the perlite, and it seemed to work well for him. He figured that way, the cakes wouldn't be in contact with the perlite, in case it had bacteria or mold growing in it somehow.

You're using cakes. Just put them on the lids to keep them off the perlite and you're ready to go.

Putting them directly on the perlite works way better IME. Then you don't have to worry about dunking, injecting, or any of those dubious teks. The cakes always get plenty of water. You'll even get a ton of pins right from the perlite.

I just see this as a very sterile way of growing. Unless you clean out that overgrown perlite often so as not to have rotting myc. and heaven forbid you ever get a contaminated cake (I have heard of them). Placing on verm filled lids is a cleaner alternative IME. But like FF said ya don't have to worry about running them dry as much as long as the water depth in the perlite is acceptable. Also even using iodine which doesn't break down immediately like peroxide does will be safe for ingestion if mixed at the proper ratio which is only 1-2 drops per gallon. GL guys
