Potting soil, crumbling cakes?

Just a few more questions for you guys since you all seem to be so helpful!
Since I've started viewing the forums I've seen many people talking about dunking and flushing. Anybody have a quick explanation for me?
Also, Ive read a few teks that say that you should use a 1 inch layer of soil in the bottom of your container, crumble the cakes into marble size peices, and spread them over the dirt. Then apply another smaller layer of dirt ontop of the crumbled cakes. It says that the myc. spreads over the dirt creating a larger fruiting surface. Is this risky to do? Is it even reccomended?
Thanks for putting up with my nOOb questions.

Basic Cultivation A dunk is when a cake is submerged in water for 12 to 24 hours. A flush is the harvest of a mycelium growth. There are 101 ways to case spawn. When it comes to indoors the recurring them is sterility. The great people who run this site and post on this site have made it such a great wealth of knowledge. Many people have been in your shoes at some point, and many of them have either asked the questions you are asking or wrote a tek on what you need to know. Explore this site until you dream about experimental cultivation methods. In the future please take advantage of this goldmine of mycomadness.

That is called casing...

More information on how to do that there. It is more risky, more possibility for contaminations but it does increase the yield if done correctly.
