    #3078332 - 09/01/04 04:31 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hi All!

i recently (foolishly!) bought a cheap bionaire Humidifier.
I believe this is a Warm mist Humidifier. (not ent. sure though!)

Can i still use this in my terranium?

Probally not. For best fruit formation you want the temperature under 80F. Why not just use pearlite? Arnt Humidifers only good for huge setups? Pearlite will give you more humidity then you need.

Thanks for the ultra quick response!

Is perlite not meant to be messy?
Can i not use the bottle setup with a humidifier?

Im not sure what you mean exctally...pearlite can be messy...hydroton or lava rocks can be a little cleaner.

Ive never used the bottle setup and frankly i dont know why anyone would.... Ive seen some tek for it online once...it seems over complicated if you consider that pearlite and fishtank bubblers can do the same thing....

Thats what i use. I have hydroton (its like pearlite) on the bottom of my terrirum and fishtank bubblers under that running 24/7. I never spray or fan my terrirum. Good Luck!

p.s. Do a search for the "poor mans pod" thats similar to what I and most people use.

You don't even need the bubblers! That makes it even simpler.

???????????
Not only do the bubbliers provide fresh air from outside the tank, they form humid air when the air particles flow through the stone and through the water and moist perlite/hydroton. H2O molecules fuse with the air and this is how you get humid air dfrom the process.

Means your not opening your terrarium 5-8 times a day to fan it, means less a chance for contams.

The perlite provides all the humidity... That's the whole reason for using it.

Also, pumping in comtaminated air is no better than fanning.

What are you talking about fanning 5-8 times a day? That seems pretty foolish to me and I've never seen anyone even suggest it. That would be a good way to get contams.

I didn't ever use a pump, nor did I fan. I put them in a tub and didn't usually open it untill they pinned. I did use a small polyfilled hole on the side for some tiny ammount of ventilation.

The entire perlite tek was created to eliminate bubblers and misting, that's the whole advantage of it.

But hes talking about the poormans pod, It uses the pump to give air exchange, he was saying you dont need to fan 5-8 times a day with this setup, if your using jsut a perlite technique you will have to fan at least 4 times a day to provide for good air exchange. I like my air pump because it has a built in filter as do most newer ones you buy.

Really that's pretty cool... How good it the built-in filter? Hepa quality?

As I mention in another thread, I used to do fine with 1 air exchange a day and even used less with a filtered hole in the side.

I realize what he was saying, my point was that 5-8 exchanges a day is excessive, and wondering where he got his info. I know plenty of people who favor 3/day, but I haven't heard anyone using 5/day let alone 8/day.

Even drilling a few 1/2-1/4 inch holes in the sides of your chamber at substrate level (across from each other), and then stuffing the holes tightly with poly-fil (to act as a filter) will allow for some passive air exchange without fanning. It should also have minimal effect on humidity if your perilte is well charged with water or you humidifier timed correctly.

Remember the primary reason for air-exchange is to exhaust Co2, which is heavier than o2 and will sink to the bottom of your chamber suffocating the developing mushrooms. Holes along the base or bottom of the chamber (or only a few inches up the sides) helps the Co2 exhaust naturally.

You are totally right. Some people have been treating me like I was an idiot for suggesting the "CO2 drainage hole tek".

It's embarrassing because some of them are even moderators here, but it seems like they've never heard of anything that wasn't written here on the shroomery within the past few years.

Seems like they really hate being reminded that people grew shrooms quite successfully long before the Shroomery came into existence.

The pump is generally placed in a box with a filter.

And of course pumping is better than fanning, one of them you don't have to do anything

If you have a small terrarium then you need to fan quite often.  Not so much the problem in larger setups though but the air pump provides humidity and fresh (filtered) air.  Its hardly a bad thing.

Not to mention the growth perameters set by Paul Stames way back in the early 1980's states quite clearly that 5-8 complete air exchanges per 24 hour period is nessecary to the best fruitings of cubies. And I seem to remember him saying more would be even better.

Well then I must be a super duper grower for getting away with zero and still having great results...

Maybe Mr. Stames(?) didn't know about the CO2 drain hole tek...

No actualy in his big book " The mushroom Culitivator "
There is an entire section decated to polyfill plugs and plastic tubs.

Paul stamets has benn doing all these teks for decades. Including the Pf jar tek.

Really? I don't have the book. What does he say about them.

It seems like you would hardly need a CO2 drain hole if you are fanning 5-8 times a day.

Somebody needs to use a CO2 meter or something like that and figure some of this suff out. There was never this much discussion of fanning and air excahnages back in the day.

Way back when, I read that air exchange wasn't that important and just normal opening of the container every once in awhile is plenty. I've always stuck by that and it's always worked for me. I've always used a drain hole also though...

I wonder if anyone's ever tried pure oxygen... That would avoid fanning for weeks at a time I would imagine.
