Betel Nut
    #3077942 - 09/01/04 02:36 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hiya folks..wsup.

I just bought 10 whole/fresh Betel Nuts+Lime and I was wondering..

How much betel nut should I use..should I crush it up into small pieces or big pieces? Also, I heard you can use 1-2 grams MAX of betel nut crushed up inside a hot drink...is this true?

I've got packs of sliced betel nut and I've never tried it either. I heard that you put a little bit of lime on the sliced or crushed nut, wrap it in a betel leaf and put it in your cheek. Some people chew it after it softens up and some mostly just suck on it. They usually spit out the juice because it's supposed to upset your stomach. The active ingredients are absorbed through the lining of the mouth and blood vessles. I have the betel leaves and lime too.

In my experience , using whole/fresh betel nut is about the best way to go. I havent had access to fresh for awhile .. Its very pungent and sort of gross tasting but very strong. The best way would be to slice it and add some lime... You can OD on betel nut, its a nasty poison in high doses. I wouldnt consume 1-2 grams orally.. Start small.

I just got done chewing some parag.

I chewed betel nut with betel leaves and didn't experience much more than from just betel nuts... Any tips stonehenge?

The leaves and the nut come from two different plants. Betel leaves come from the Piper betel vine, and Betel nuts come from the Betel palm (Areca catechu), the plant got associated and even assumed the name Betel because Betel leaves are used to wrap Paans.. Which contain Betel Leaf wrap, Areca nuts, lims, and other additions for flavor.

Betel leaves do not come from the tree that the nuts come from.

Yeah? and I had piper betel leaves....

There is a legend of two twin brothers. No one could tell them apart... One day an elder gave the two brothers one bowl of rice. When one of the brothers ate from the bowl first he knew that he was the first born. So the elder had his daughter marry the first born.. The younger brother wondered the earth untill he came to a river and died from loneliness.. He became the the areca catechu tree.. The older brother went out to find his brother and when he came to the same river he slipped and died and became a large slate of Lime.. His wife went looking for him and she came to the river and died and became the piper betel vine, climbing up the areca tree.

or something like that.. i forget the specifics..

Not really, but I do know the betel leaves have some power of their own. People have been known to chew them by themselves when they had nothing else. Otherwise, they would use most any leaf to wrap it in. I'm thinking that an extraction might be interesting. Maybe soak the chopped or sliced nuts in water with a little lime? You could drink the extract or boil it down. You could also just hold it in the mouth for a while to see how it's absorbed. If it was easier to use it would become popular.

I was told that the betel leaf contributes to the euphoric properties of the chew while the areca nut contributed to the stimulating aspects.

oh, i've really been wanting to try basement shamans betel nut.. i just figure I could probably make it as easy as him so I havent got around to it.. What is the packaging like? Basement shaman has the best packaging I have EVER seen from an ethno company (And this is one of his competitors talking!).. I like BS a lot and gladly support them. They are a little expensive but its well worth it.

They came well sealed in a mylar/ziplock package.

I agree, good stuff, I'll order from them again.
