Seeing that there are no poisonous Tooth Fungi,I decided to cook some of this up and try it.....MMMMmm... Great tasting.Anyone know what type of Hericium this is?. Found growing on dead hardwood in Western Michigan.

It's most likely H. Erinaceaus, but there is not much differentiation between species. here is a key to the genus Hericium

They're my personal favorite. I think they're easily as good as morels. I have some cloned tissue growing out on agar now. I'm hoping to be able to fruit them on straw or woodchips.

Hericium coralloides [Re: Pinhead]
    #11808574 - 01/11/10 04:26 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hi that looks to me like Hericium coralloides, also known as the coral mushroom. it is slightly different from Hericium erinaceus, also called lionsmane. the lionsmane is more common than the coral mushroom. very good edible.

I think i remember reading that rabbit had a huge problem with the spores.  His Hericium looked like some kind of weird tentacle monster from the deep sea, the teeth looked huge like a pencil.  It must have been either a real wacked out clone or rabbit is so good at growing mushrooms it turned into a huge monster.

I'm tempted to reply to 5 year old threads all the time, i always end up in them because of the similar threads at the bottom.  Sometimes those will show you threads that are seven or eight years old.

haha he said they're as good as morels?  Does that mean I can charge $25/lb for them?  RR, do you still stand by that statement 5 years later?  If so, I need to get to work, I've never tried them but I do have a slant.

Hericium is good, but I'll probably have to back off on the 'good as morels' thing.  I now live in an area with morels, and have become nearly addicted.

I can't look at those, they're too large.  I live in a cabin in the middle of BFE and can't get true high speed internet.  I have a satellite dish, but they're only slightly better than dial up, and way slower than dsl.
