24/7 Lighting

From what I have read, I don't think this would be a huge problem... but just needed to make sure. Would it do any harm to give pf jars constant light, all the time? My incubator I am building has a computer fan near the bottom which has a blue led, which I figure I could use for lighting as well. So, would this be alright? If it matters, the jars plan to be done invitro, that is why I want light in my incubator.

Stamet's says you should use a 12/12 schedule, and you ahve to remember that this is what the mushroom has evolved with, light cycles. Considering that they only use light to know with way is up, it might work, but I've heard reports that constant light has negatively effected pinning (don't flame me, I don't have any experience with it myself)

As far as I have read here, while they do need light for pinning, shrooms actually grow more and faster when it is dark.... which is why a 12/12 light cicle would be recomended...

During incubation you do not want ANY light. You use light to initiate pinning. YOu want total darkness during incubation until full colonization otherwise youll get premature pinning.

Read his post dude, he's doing invitro.
In reguard to your question. 24hr/day lighting works just fine. It's a bit of a power waste, but will work great.
I once compared 16/8 (the standard cycle for experiments) with 24hr/day and the results were the same.
So IMHO and IME, there is no difference between differing light cycles.

No.
They do need light for pinning, but they aren't going to grow any faster in the dark. I suppose you could argue that, but it's not going to be a noticable speed improvement.
You could argue that the mycelium wastes less energy trying to pin and therefore grows faster, but growing them in complete darkness is usually impractical considering that people can't resist checking on them all the time.

Hi, I'm about to start growing some mushrooms too, and as this thread is about lighting how much light would you recomend for fruiting? would 24/7 lighting be too much and why?

24/7 is probably the easist, in that you don't have to turn the light off and on again. 24/7 seems to work fine. I don't think you can have too much light unless it's harsh light from a high wattage system.
On the other hand you don't need much light at all. One guy posted that he had fine results just shining a flashlight on each cake for 1 minute a day.
My advice has always been that if you can read by the light, it is plenty. The cycles really don't matter at all. Use whatever is convienent for you. Anywhere from 1 to 24 hours a day will give you pretty much the same results. It's about the only aspect I know of that nobody has ever fucked up.

If you can, try 24/7 light.
It sure makes it easier to watch your first grow.
24-7 works fine. Great for newbies.

Is keeping the jars in total darkness to prevent premature pinning absolutely necessary? And would just an average indoor growing bulb be sufficient?

Keeping jars dark prevents premature pinning, but the vast majority of jars will not prematurely pin... even if exposed to light.
Usually, light or no, jars pin when they are fully colonized.

People have incubated using a incandescent but you really give up 1/3 of your pinning triggers if you do resulting in a poorer pinset. I know for a fact nice bright lighting during pinsetting helps noticeably but after that whether the intensity or duration can improve yields I'm not going to say there may be a combination that may result in improved growth either way IME it would be minimal. I believe 12/12 is a more efficient use of ones resources which is what I will always recommend beside most living things process carbs best during the rest period it's only natural as 6T would say.

That's right! 24 hour light works great and saves the work of turning the light on and off again.
They will also pin in complete darkness, they just won't pin heavy and it will take a long time. They also grow albino.

I dont see them growing as albino when they arent dependant on chlorophil to produce color. Yes, I have grown in complete darkness.

This thread does not reccomend 24-7 light. 12 on 12 off works fine and is more like mother nature. But... 24-7 light works fine too... especially for invitro... otherwise, you may get a few early pins... but usually, light or no, cakes tend to pin only once they are fully colonized. If you are a newbie, don't worry too much about light. Look at your jars, and watch 'em grow. You will learn more about the life cycle of myc when you can watch it. Any questions?

Just speaking from experience here. I left some jars in complete darkness for several months. When I took them out there was a bunch of knarly white mushrooms. Maybe the caps were slightly brown, but they were much whiter than ones grown regularly.
So were yours albinoish or not?
