The casing layer is not meant to be nutritious, it's just to:
1) Protect the substrate from drying out.
2) Provide a humid environment for primordial formation.
3) Provide a water reservoir for sprouting mushrooms.
4) To support the growth of the maturing specimens

Your casing layer is a barrier against airborne contams.
The more nutrients in the layer, the easier for contams to drop onto and grow.
When there is nothing to consume, the contam is unable to spread and germinate.

brf used on cases is not a good idea becuase its open to alot of contams, stick with plain verm.

Also something that was not mentioned is that the myc will consume the casing as it runs through it, this means more veg growth which keeps the mycelium from pinning properly (generative growth), this is an often overlooked pinning trigger that is not so obvious Great answer btw Alien GL guys
