PPI and Photographs
    #3073899 - 08/31/04 01:24 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Ok... so I got some digi pics, I've edited them a bit. They are approx. 2100 x 1500 pixels, with a resolution of 150ppi after editing. They are also approx. 14x11 inches according to photoshop. Now my question is.... if I have these printed... like at Wal Mart, into hard copy photographs [14x11 size], will they be pixelized? And how many ppi does a hard copy photo typically have? Thx for any help guys.

Google may be man's best friend....found this blurb
***************
IMAGE RESOLUTION FOR PRINTING

Minimum resolution for magazine-quality printing is 300ppi, so a VGA image of 640x480 will only allow for a decent print of 3.2 x 1.6 inches (640pixels/300ppi=2.1 inches by 480pixels/300ppi=1.6 inches). 640x480=0.3Mpixels.

If you want to make a good 8x10 print under the above standards, it will be best to have a 300ppi image with a size of 2400 by 3000 (8x300 by 10x300), a 7.2Mpixel scan. So now you know exactly the why of the quest for higher Mpixel rating from scanners (and digital cameras), even when interpolation may acceptably invent pixels where there are none.

Looks like you could get a pretty 5.5x7 inch print at 300ppi instead.

Also, read the section under Figure 3 at
http://clarkvision.com/imagedetail/printer-ppi/
where the guy compares 600ppi images to 300ppi images.
