For everyong who has been cultivating for awhile, When casing rye jars how many mutants do you guys get per casing?? Or any other type of casing for that matter.

Depends on the spores used. My friend, Don Quixote has seen his share of mutants. Mutants are fun... but usually they all look normal.

None with normal casings in normal conditions. Depends on strains and such though.

Im just kinda curious cause i recently saw a batch of B+, that was cased with vermiculite only and it threw a bunch of aborts and muties, still got 14 dry grams off of it in normal mushies but am trying to figure out why. I know casing with just vermiculite isnt the norm, and it was just a top layer, but it was one i hadnt cared too much about so i just threw it together real quick. Also lets say a quart of rye was colonizing and for a short amt of time green mold showed up and then the mycelium took over, a very small amt of mold. When it went to get cased there was no green mold found in it whatsoever. Im curious if this could also cuase a contamination???

Casing with plain verm is plenty normal. It usually works just great and is more contam resistant than 50/50.

Never used coir... The 50/50(+) seemed to perform a little better than verm, but contamed quicker. It took a little longer to master the best conditions for the verm, while the the 50/50 was pretty easy the first time around.

My conclusion is that verm is a little more sensitive to having the right conditions than 50/50, but once you find the sweet spot with your setup the verm will perform just as well. The only real problem when conditions are off with verm is that you might get some spotty, uneven pinning.

Just IME, YMMV, but verm really is a great casing.

no it performed just fine for doing it half assed. 14 grams dry.
