J-pop
    #3070267 - 08/30/04 07:21 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Has anyone heard any J-pop before? I heard it for the first time a couple days ago coming off of shrooms. It's Japanese popular music. Some of it is actually really good, but I can't find much on Kazaa.

Yeah! This weird guy I worked with turned me onto a little. He's into free jazz and real obscure loud noisy shit, but then he'll put on some j-pop. It's rather surreal. But of course, after a few listens, the shit gets in your head. I suggest Shiina Ringo definitely. Muzai Moratorium is her best album. Also check out Shonen Knife, though they sing in english sometimes which maybe makes them not real j-pop. And Aikawa Nonase (sp?) is cool, too. Good luck, man!!!

Yeah I got some Shonen Knife. I saw them on clip trip on much more music. They were featured on it, they were playing j-pop and they had 3 shonen videos althought i missed the first. Supposedly they toured with Nirvana twice, once in america and once in britain. Cobain wanted to play their song twist barbie and the one chick in Shonen Knife showed him how to play it.

But yea it does get stuck in the head easy. I was at work and had some Puffy Ami Yumi and Shonen Knife stuck in my head for the longest time. Thanks for the recommendations, i'll have to check it out. I'm trying to bombard myself with all kinds of music and just take it all in and finding this new kind of music is really cool.

real j-pop is sickly sweet boy bands like 'smap' and kinki kids, or girl groups like morning musume. they all tend to spend their time advertising beer or coffee or new cars rather than developing their songcraft.
lots of good bands here - try dragonash, captain funk/tatsuya oe, ken ishii, boom boom satellites, polysics.
if you like glam metal you could check out 'hide with spread beaver' or koizumi's favorite band 'x japan'
