All of this came from AFOAF. I take no responsibility of this post. Also, this grow log isn't complete. But heres the deal. Anyones input is welcome, and greatly appreciated.
- EQ PF cakes were started on 7/25/04.
- Cakes fully colonized after 20 days. Waited an additional 3 days for the mycelium to strengthen its network.
- Nuked 50/50 casing mix in the microwave on HIGH for 7min.
- Waited awhile for the mix to cool... Smauked a bowl.
- Added 1/2" 50/50 mix to bottom layer.
- Cut 3 1/4 PF cakes into ~2" slices. Layered across bottom layer, and fill in holes by crumbling remaining cake.
- Added 3/4" layer of 50/50 mix on the top.
- Placed in terrrarium.
My FOAF should be putting up pictures in the future, as things progress. A few side notes...
- No lime or oyster shell was used because it was too hard to find in this area (oyster shell to be specific).
- The water content of the 50/50 mix seemed alright. After squeezing a handful of mix, very little water was seen between my fingers.
Wish me luck! Updates: 08/19/04 Patched casing with more 50/50 mix. Everything looks good so far. (On a side note... lime was not added as a buffer in the mix. After calling a dozen stores, I still couldn't find any. It's been put on order, but these cakes couldn't wait.) 08/22/04 Mycelium is coming in a little fuzzy. The rH levels are too high with a layer of perlite on the bottom of the terrarium. Removed perlite. Also notice a white bubbly looking patch... possibly contams. 08/23/04 The white bubbly looking patch is ineed pins! 30 in one area counted so far. Another spot coming in on the other end of the casing. No pics yet, camera needs batteries. Oops. So far, so good. 08/24/04 Pins pins everywhere! I can hardley contain myself... 08/30/04 The past few days I have been picking mushrooms, and just yesterday, I ditched the casing. I can summarize this up pretty quickly. This was not a failure, nor a sucess. I had an uneven pinset, and pins growing on the side and bottom of the casing. I have came to two conclusions (thanks to everyones help). The mycelium layer of a casing needs to be as even as possible. Cucumber size slices are no good. Next time: crumble. Second, tinfoil is a terrible idea for covering the sides and bottom of a plastic container. The light seemed to reflect off of the inside and bounce along the sides. Probably explains the pins going everywhere. Also, the humidity gauge I had was terrible. I forgot that it would stop reading after it hit 86% rH. This lead to a very high humidity level, and lots of fuzzy mycelium. On another note, sorry for the lack of batteries. Too busy to run to the store Expect another log in a month or so! Final weight: 1/2 oz dry

Excellent. My FOAF sees many more pins than he thought. I guess he'll have to pick up some batteries after work
