oyster questions
    #3066122 - 08/29/04 05:57 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

If it's humid enough outdoors to fruit oysters is it better to do so from the garden like a compost pile or the hanging bags? the reason I ask is that I saw some here some contamed jars of golden oysters placed in the ground mized with a bit of past. straw and they seemed like they flourished. Thoughts?

I think it depend very much on the conditions they have outside (as well as inside).
When they have better fruiting conditions they will fruit better :smirk:.
So, when you have a warm weather strain and the weather is warm and there is enough humidity and light they will grow outdoors very well.
But if the temps are low they won't fruit at all.

In late spring I started an oyster "column" using fermented wheat straw as a bulk media. It began fruiting in two weeks and hasn't stopped all through summer. We have had a cooler wet summer than on average.
In warm wet weather I have watched H. Ulmarius and P. Ostreatus grow from the size of a half dollar in the morning to palm sized by lunch.
The middle of summer isn't prime season for oyster mushrooms, but they will surely fruit.

It is in GGMM, chop straw and soak in water for two days. Bacteria will bloom and it will turn into a stinky mess. Drain it (you can get away with rinsing it too), and spawn. Within a few days the sour bacteria smell will be long gone.

Woow, sound easy. How were your results with this method ?
And what species did you raise on that fermented substrate ?
Would be a good tek to treat the substrate for SRA, what do you think ?

I fruited P. ostreatus and H. Ulmarius on the fermented straw. I haven't used the fermented straw indoors and do not plan on it, mostly because of the smell. It is really stinky stuff. Because I haven't used it inside, I do not know the "colonization window" of the fermented straw. My columns outside never turned into white blocks, but that didn't matter because they were outside. So, my hypothesis is: SRA can be grown on fermented straw outdoors.

The most prolific fruiting I saw was in late spring/early summer. Since it is not yet a year old, I can't confirm it could survive the winter or even if it has enough food for more than one year. IMHO, moisture is more important that temperature. Even if it is 85 degrees F, the mushrooms will still fruit if they have enough moisture.

It doesn't really take much effort. If you start one now you'll have mushrooms two weeks from now until late fall.

Thus, not knowing whether it will survive winter, early spring would be the best time to start. But anytime will work.

the agar tranfer went well and nice white mycelium is starting to colonize the dishes, however, I used 1 ml H202 via peroxide tek, and noticed that the mycelium is growing in more of a puff ball around the fruit as opposed to growing along the agar. Does oyster have problems with H202 or should it be okay?

It's a good sign, that it has puffed up. That confirms that it is still alive. Within a few days it should leap off onto the agar and start to make its way across the plate.

And that it has, Thanks for the positive words. Should I wait until it completely covers the dish and then take a slice? Also I've heard variations as to how large of a slice I should take? Just one more question, I promise, is birdseed the preferred method. Had great success with birdseed before but this will be the first oyster and it seems like a lot of people use birdseed, just getting other opinions. Thanks to everyone who's helped, it's a lot harder to get answers in this forum.

One of the commercial cultivators in my area use a mixture of a little birdseed to alot of sawdust, probably a 1:8 ratio.
