Something unusual happened while searching
    #3069032 - 08/30/04 12:14 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I discovered a big pile of horse dung/Hay by my nearest stable and I found some pins poking out. I knew they would be good sized in a day or two so I i went back home.

Two days later i went back there and the stems were all grown up but the caps were missing...?

Anyone know what could have happened?

by the way i live in NJ.
The mushroom stems were a light grey.

I've seen an all stems patch before- it means that they grew with the caps and the caps were knocked off when mature already- probably with a swipe from a hoof or something- looks crazy, huh? I've seen it with pans. in horse fields a lot- bummer if they were any good, oh- but I see stems were a light grey and I see NJ- nevermind. Still wierd- thanks for sharing your weirdness!

Or because of the common fact that someone already beat you to the mushroom pack and only took the caps..

Motaman got it. They are probably inky caps and the caps will deliquesce after mature (they just melt off) leaving the stems behind. Was there a black goo anywhere near?

Peace - @cro

Exactly what I was thinking... Coprinus. The caps will "melt" off after a day or two.
