Mushroom Incubation Confusion
    #3068503 - 08/30/04 09:49 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I am not sure what to do exactly in terms of "fanning" what I do is literally take the lid off and start fanning the cakes with it. I was thinking "what if I just took an old computer fan and attached it to the incubation chamber... hmm...

You do not fan during incubation, that is a pinning trigger once your cakes are birthed and yes you can use the lid or a small battery operated personal fan which is what I use. Fanning duration only need be 20-30 seconds minimal exposure lowers contam rates All your doing is getting that co2 out of the chamber and off of the casing surface effectively lowering co2 concentrations. GL You really need to read alot more before you attempt a grow or you'll just be wasting time and money

Jars should never be opened during the incubation phase, unless they are opened in a completely sterile environment (glove box or in front of HEPA flow hood).

Opening your jars in unsterile settings before colonization is complete will almost undoubtedly lead to contamination.

Confusion abounds!   That was one helluva question there CreamSoda! You have lots of reading ahead of you I see before you start. Read PFTek it's really good for newbies just remember  take the tape off the holes immediately after innoculating the jars and incubate in the lower 80's and fruit in the mid 70's. GL

How important is the fruiting temperature?

I'm only on my second grow, so far my temps have been low 60s, probably even lower at night. It doesn't seem to have had an adverse effect, but then I've got nothing to compare it to...

There a wide range (upper 60's to low to mid 90's) but low 60's and lower for cubies will absolutely make a big difference in growth rate. Cool temps slow metabolic activity.
