Hey,
The casing layer is 1 1/4" deep. I checked on it today and no growth as expected, going to wait and check again on sunday. Even though I will prolly look tomorrow :P
It is actually 8 jars, of which I used them all. I need to make like 2 more for patching and the such. I need to go buy some more coco-coir.
Speaking of which how do you guys know how much coir will expand into what. I always dont know how much to break off the block to moisturize. Any tips?
I am so excited I cant wait.

Wow thats a thick casing! It might be a bit too thick but i havent experimented with casings that thick, ~1/2" is the norm. I was asking for the whole depth of substrate and casing. I just have a pre expanded block of coir in a bag and go off that but a brick makes about 2.5 gal or about 1/3 of a cubic foot. From that you can figgure out your cubic inches of casing then convert to cubic feet. But having it pre expanded is much easier and always steralize extra.

hehe, i told your ass man! 8! 6 jars of spawn, yes, but 8 jars worth of casing, which is what dude was asking
if you guys would seriously just keep up and read everything that the poster says, you can find the answers to your questions. Bob is very informative, he knows what to say....yet he still gets needless questions
you really that stoned?

I've had problems with uncolonized straw..which is why I always use a top layer of spawn either alone or mixed with verm....the drawback is you can't see the straw colonizing but if its at the proper temp and you used enough spawn it will be done in 2 weeks

Walrus: Yeah when I was putting all the spawn in the straw I debated on whether or not I should put some wbs on the top, but in the end I decided not to as I hadn't seen anyone else doing it. Also I really couldn't get out of the bathroom to check the forums because I didn't wanna introduce new air to the room. And because of really no air circulation it got so damn hot in that bathroom Gr0wer: The Substrate is about 5-6 inches deep so really that casing is a good depth. I did some reading before putting it down so... How long do you keep that pre-expanded coco-coir. Even though it would be PCed before use, could storing it long term be bad? I wouldn't think so though because it doesn't have any nutrients. Does it? I think I can hold out on checking it till tomorrow. This keg sitting next to me sure will help me with that Gotta love college game days. Till next time. edit: Kotton: Yeah I try to be very thorough, as I don't know when the next time I can post will be, so I try to answer the questions before they come :P Although, please post any you might have that is why I started this. I love seeing people post.

It shouldnt go bad, just drain it out well. There are minimal nutes so contams arent likely to colonize it.

Checked on it today. Not to much myc comming through. I am gonna patch what I need to tomorrow. Also gr0wer I am gonna pick up some more coco-coir and go ahead and expand it all then just store it.
SocietyR: That was to help me make a nice even casing layer. They were just paper as it was all I had. Next time I am gonna use PVC the paper was really flimsy but it got the job done. You just make the rings the height of what you want the casing layer to be then put down the casing layer and remove the rings.
I will have pics tomorrow morning. Seeya then

I always store my coir...I add as little as much boiling water as possible to expand it then just keep it in a freezer bag or verm bag or whatever...when time to case I mix it with some verm add water with a lil h202 and case....the casing layer dosen't need to be sterilized...imo the main reason for casing layers developing mold is contams growing from nutes off the substrate in the coir and then surfacing...so I always spray a lil h202/water down on my substrate before adding the casing layer EDIT: just don't keep the coir at fc make sure its as dry as possible while also being expanded...I've tried keeping fc verm/coir and had nothing but contams with that

You dont even have to fully expand it, there can be a few chunks. After a day or so the dry chunks should slowly mositurize and break up.
Or you can always squeeze out the extra water

Thanks for the coco-coir tips guys. Gonna do that today. Also checked on the casing and I got a good lookin spot pokin through. Gonna patch it. Also those pics I promised you guys, well I forgot I let a friend borrow my camera I will call him today and say I need it. Each day just gets me more excited, I cant wait.
On another note last night I had the weirdest dream. I drempt that I went to check on the grow and when I did there was a blanket in there that had mushrooms all over it. Then I decided that I should take the blanket out because there is no need for a blanket in there. When I did everything went to shit and there was like nothing left in the tub. I got so scared. Then I woke up and was relieved to find out it was all in my head. Might seem weird to you guys but you know how hard it is to describe a dream.

hmm, well it meant something. you use a blanket for warmth(most people do anyways). so maybe if the temp drops a shitload you could get contams? but if you keep the temps up you will have success.
i mean its just pure speculation, only you know what it meant, meditate on it if you want.

I am trying man. I tried to call my friend who has my camera yesterday, but it seems his phone was dead. I am gonna try and get it today. It also looks like I am getting strep throat. My tonsils are basically white. So I am going to the doc today.
On another note it looks like the casing is going to explode here any day. So flicking on the lights isn't very far away. Oh boy. I will post once I get pictures. I aim to please.

Sorry to disappoint again but I am going to. Still don't have my camera so another text update I wanna post pictures as badly as you wanna see them trust me. I love looking @ others pictures so I know how you guys feel.
On another note yesterday I had to patch about 1/4 of the casing. Any day now those lights will be coming on Also I had to patch with straight verm as our pet store here doesn't have any coco-coir. Pissed me off it is a nice little pet store and they looked @ me like WTF are you talking about coco-coir. So I guess I will get it online.

Yeah so I had a stoner moment this morning. I came on here typed up my post uploaded the photos and then previewed the post. Then thinking the preview was my post I closed the window :P So here is the repost if that is what you call it. Walrus: they deffinatly dont have cococoir they only have 2 types of bedding. Which really sucks, but I am going to buy in bulk from some place online. On with the show. On Saturday I initiated pinning. I tried my best to patch the casing, but I got lazy. I could of sterilized some more verm to patch with, but I just said fuck it. I think I will be alright. Here are the pics post your comments. I CANT WAIT FOR THE PINS
btw, the reason for the dark spots in this pic are all the patching was done with verm and that middle section = 50/50 verm/coir also I think that section is gonna do just fine. Atleast I hope it will
