Catha edulis (Khat) tissue culture. Seeds were purchased almost a year ago from bouncing bob.

The seeds were surface sterilised in bleach then set up on germination medium. Many did not sprout, many were contaminated so i ended with 1 healthy seedling. After a few experiments with different media i think we have now have a good protocol for the multiplication. I haven't rooted any shoots yet, but that should not be a big problem.

Please don't ask for the medium recipe, that's company secret. What i can tell you, as you can see in the pics, is that the addition of actived charcoal is very benificial to the cultures. The plants have a tendency to produce lots of exudate which will sicken the culture. Activated charcoal completely solved that problem

My gnome has had very good results germing khat. He just puts the seeds on the surface and covers about 2mm deep with sand, keeps it moist and in a few weeks, seedlings come up. You may have had old seed.

Nice looking khat plantlets. At least you proved you could do it.

Khat was no problem to germinate for me either. I got a 70% germination rate, which I figured was OK. Some died of fungus, though...
Una, can I ask what kind of lighting you have on those, and if you have a fan or anything blowing? My seedlings have very thin little stems, yours look more robust...

They are standing under one fluorescent tube (16/day) with no fan. Fanning would be useless since they grow in closed microboxes.

We hope to be able to offer these plant on our website within a few months.

Oh, and i'm not complaining about poor germination. As i said, they were surface sterilised in bleach. That's 10 minutes in 25% household bleach, no wonder many of them die.

hmm how come the leaves and stems have no red pigment?

Any ways thats a wonderful thing you are doing there. I am working on a different nonstrile way of propogating this plant. by bending it down to the ground and rooting the part that comes in contact. So far I got some nice root growth. I hope it will take off and produce some nice shoots.
