Pup from a pup
    #3062887 - 08/28/04 07:51 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Some of you may find this interesting. I've seen a pup seemingly form from a small seedling but I'm not sure I've seen one come from a small pup like this. The main plant is a cutting and it has three pups now not counting the new arrival.

The pup which formed this new pup looked montrose at first. I didn't know that normal san pedro could turn montrose so I was watching it closely. Then the little pup erupted. It does look a little strange. It could turn out to be very interesting.

Felix, do you know about monstroses coming from normal pedro?

sure, where do you think the mutated cacti come from?
perhaps some come from seed but you'll sooner or later see monstrous/crested arms arising out of regular plants (rather old plants i must say).
i think it has something to do with soil nutrients and perhaps also with some bacteria that grow in the areoles (or mold? sorry, migraine fogs my mind. bacteria, i guess).

The growing tip was probably damaged.

No, the growing tip was not damaged. I know because I was watching the pup since it looked a little monstrose. The ribs were kind of flattened out near the tip like you see with some monstrose. So far the new pup looks normal. If anything interesting happens I'll do an update.
